Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Léoville Poyferré 2001
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep ruby-red hue verging on garnet, with slight signs of evolution at the rim.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet charms with notes of ripe black fruit such as plum, blackcurrant and blackberry. It is enriched by nuances of cedar, caramel and spicy wood, along with delicate tertiary touches of truffle and ferrous minerality.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate offers a velvety texture supported by fine, ripe tannins. Moderate acidity brings lovely balance to the whole, leading to a classic, serious finish marked by forest-floor aromas.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast or grilled red meats, such as beef fillet or rib of beef on the bone. It is also a perfect match for lamb dishes, game, mushroom and truffle recipes, as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Château Léoville Poyferré 2001, it is best served at around 17 to 18°C. Gentle decanting or aerating it in the bottle beforehand can help it open up. This wine has reached full maturity and is ready to be enjoyed now.
The elegance and structure of a Saint-Julien wine
The estate
Created in 1840 from the division of a vast historic estate, Château Léoville Poyferré has established itself as an essential benchmark in Bordeaux, France. Located on the Left Bank, the estate has been recognised as a Second Grand Cru Classé since 1855. Since 1920, the Cuvelier family has watched over this gem with a meticulous approach often likened to the work of a lacemaker. Now run by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, the estate combines tradition, technical modernisation and respect for the environment. It stands out for wines that unite power, charm and an incomparably velvety texture.
The vineyard
The vineyard covers 60 hectares in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, around 45 years old, are planted on magnificent terraces of Mindel gravel over a sandy-clay subsoil. This exceptional terroir, close to the Gironde estuary, benefits from natural drainage and excellent temperature regulation. Farmed using sustainable viticulture with environmental certification, the estate practises full soil cultivation and double Guyot pruning, and is experimenting with organic methods on certain plots.
The vintage
The year was marked by weather conditions typical of the region, offering remarkable balance. Less warm than the previous year, the weather allowed the berries to ripen slowly and evenly, fostering lovely freshness and perfectly ripe tannins.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested plot by plot, followed by rigorous double sorting. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated-cone stainless steel vats, with cold pre-fermentation maceration. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a high proportion of them new, for 18 to 20 months.
Grape varieties
Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
