Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Singed cedar, savory and humus accents run alongside a core of currant and bitter cherry fruit, imbuing this with an old-school feel. Reveals a chalky mineral note on the finish. A touch austere but shows good character. Drink now through 2023. 1,500 cases made.

Medium-bodied, forward, open and fresh, with a core of red fruits, green, leafy herbs, and bright, crisp, savory red fruits. You can easily enjoy this on release or age it for a couple of years to add more nuance. The wine was aged with no new oak to maintain the freshness in the fruit.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Made from 100% Merlot, the 2017 Marsau is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It springs from the glass with youthful raspberry coulis, rose oil, aniseed, and wild blueberries, with wafts of lavender and kirsch. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully elegant and refreshing, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral-laced finish. This has so much energy!

Well-built, precise and refined, but without the depth of a fine natural vintage.

Description

The generosity and structure of a great red wine from Francs Côtes de Bordeaux

The greatest terroirs are not always found in the most famous appellations, and Château Marsau is the perfect proof.

Set in a lush green landscape at one of the highest points of the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, east of Saint-Émilion, Château Marsauveille expands over a 13-hectare vineyard with a superb terroir.

In these deep soils of clay, only one grape flourishes perfectly and this is none other than Merlot, the Dark Lord of Bordeaux’s Right Bank.

The 2017 vintage is one that will surely be remembered. With the vineyard severely affected by episodes of frost at the end of April, Château Marsau saw its harvest drastically limited in quantity. However, the great wine of the property, Château Marsau 2017 highlights the extreme attention paid to the vine throughout the vegetative cycle, the intense precision of the technical teams out in the vineyard. Rigorous selection during the harvest allowed for only the best grapes to be included in this wine.

When tasted, the Château Marsau 2017 exudes a great aromatic freshness, highlighting the brightness of fruit. The palate already reveals a beautiful texture, and a tannic structure with a silky grain that continues into a long and fine finish. Straightforward and precise, yet marked by an identity of its own, the Château Marsau 2017 promises to be a success of its appellation.
