Vinum

Dark fruit, violet, white pepper, blackcurrant; full-bodied on the palate, round and soft on the attack. Despite just 13.5% alcohol, the wine shows a certain opulence. The tannins are of the highest quality, cloaking the fruit in a silken mantle. The mid-palate grows more powerful while remaining focused and elegant; the finish is of excellent length, ending spicy and red-fruited. A seductive Pontet-Canet combining charm and nobility.

Decanter

Deep purple plum colour in the glass with earthy, blackcurrant fruit aromas. Crystalline and focussed, this is seamless and quite straight - tannins are fine but give a solid structure and edge to the wine with brilliant purity to the fruit. Excellent freshness but it’s more than just cool and pure, there’s perfect tension and weight, clarity and finesse with detail - sinewy, juicy, fresh, fragrant, cool and mouthwatering. Delicate and graceful with the power from ample tannins building afterwards full of liquorice, sticky cola, black chocolate, a dusting of espresso and tobacco. A very transparent expression of the vintage - not overly demonstrative but structured and fresh with a great promise of long ageing. 3.7pH. Harvest 2-15 September with indigenous yeasts and no sulphur usage for fermentations and a long maceration to soften the tannis. 1% of Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new oak, 35% amphoras and 15% one wine barrels.

Dark purple in color, the wine exudes currants, peppery spices, blackberries, and licorice on the nose. The palate is lush and creamy. Intensely concentrated with lift and balanced by richness, the wine culminates in a long, mouth-coating finish packed with black currants, chocolate, spice, mint, and flowers. The wine blends 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.3% ABV. Harvesting took place September 2 - September 23. Much of the vintage's success is due to the late-June rains, followed by late-August rains, which helped achieve ripeness and lower ABV levels while adding lift and energy. The wine is aging in a combination of 50% new, French oak barrels, 35% Amphora, and neutral oak. Drink from 2032-2065. 96-98 Pts

Inky but vivid bright plum colour, tannins at the front of the mouth, a ton of energy, if reserved at this early stage. Expect graphite and crayon, lovely lift and floral Cabernet Sauvignon character; low yields like much of Pauillac and small berries ensuring the tannins are plentiful. Walks the line of fresh and juicy flavours alongside a brooding concentrated architecture, huge ageing potential with cold ash and gunsmoke nuance. Although there was some rain at end of June and July, this was still a dry vintage, and vineyard work including braiding the vines for shade and applying chamomile as sunscreen, so they coped better than in 2022 overall. Harvest September 2 to 23, indigenous yeasts that are specific to the vintage, 40% new oak, 35% clay amphoras, 15% one year old barrels. Extended maceration, low SO2 with zero added until after fermentation.

Pontet Canet’s bouquet is more Pauillac than ever, with exceptional definition to boot. The palate feel sets the tone straight away. The tannins are remarkably precise, delivering power that is perfectly under control. This highlights all the finesse in the wine, giving pride of place to a suave, juicy touch and achieving perfect balance within a framework of outstanding intensity. I’ll gladly say it again: when a wine manages to set power and finesse side by side, it is invariably great—sometimes truly great. Here, there’s nothing to overthink: you just have to drink it (to believe it). Without a doubt, one of the truly, truly great Pontet Canet! Beyond its greatness, the wine delights in how clearly it fulfills its purpose: to be drunk! Everyone will find their own rhythm and the right moment, with one reassuring constant: the wine’s greatness; it will remain unwavering for quite some time. You simply need to enjoy it at the right time, between 2030 and 2060.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Pontet-Canet 2025

Tasting

Appearance
The wine reveals a deep purple hue, enhanced in its youth by bluish highlights and delicate violet nuances along the rim of the glass.

Nose
Of great purity, the aromatic bouquet is complex and layered. It releases intense aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, and blackcurrant, interwoven with elegant notes of violet, candied flowers, and black truffle. With aeration, hints of tobacco leaf, fresh herbs, fennel, bitter cocoa bean, and a subtle minerality reminiscent of graphite further enrich the ensemble.

Palate
The palate seduces with its silky texture and remarkable elegance, supported by supple tannins that provide beautiful structure without any harshness. This medium-bodied wine, both concentrated, expressive, and juicy, unfolds flavors of fragrant black and blue fruits with magnificent tension. The long and persistent finish stretches out with bright mineral and floral notes.

Food and wine pairings
This great wine pairs beautifully with marbled red meats such as ribeye steak, as well as herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also enhance game dishes such as duck breast or roast pheasant, along with flavorful vegetarian dishes like black truffle risotto or a mushroom stew. To finish the meal, aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère will be an ideal choice.

The elegance and purity of a Pauillac wine by Château Pontet-Canet

The estate
Founded in 1705 by Jean-François de Pontet, the Château Pontet-Canet is an iconic estate of the Pauillac appellation, in the Bordeaux region. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, this 81-hectare estate has belonged to the Tesseron family since 1975, with Justine Tesseron now at its head. A true pioneer, the estate distinguished itself by becoming the first Classified Growth of the Médoc to be fully certified in organic and biodynamic farming as early as 2010. Soil work carried out with draft horses and a respectful approach to living ecosystems shape the unique identity of this exceptional estate.

The vineyard
Located at the heart of the prestigious Pauillac appellation, the vineyard covers 81 hectares and benefits from the maritime influence of the Gironde estuary. The vines, averaging 45 years of age and planted at a high density of 9,500 vines per hectare, thrive on two distinct terroirs: a plateau of Garonne gravel resting on a limestone base, ideal for cabernet sauvignon, and plots closer to the river with clay-limestone soils, perfect for merlot. Entirely managed under biodynamic practices, the estate favors soil work with draft horses and manual training of the vines, allowing each vine to express itself naturally without trimming or green harvesting.

The vintage
The year 2025 was marked by extreme and contrasting weather conditions. After a milder-than-average winter, a very rainy April protected the vines from frost while increasing mildew pressure. Budburst was early, beginning on April 7. A very dry period then set in from the end of April, with only 96 mm of rainfall over the following four months. Flowering took place at the end of May under high temperatures exceeding 30°C. The hot, dry summer was punctuated by welcome rainfall at the end of June and July, maintaining controlled water stress. Rainfall at the end of August reactivated the plant’s physiology before particularly early harvests, which began on September 2 in cool and unstable weather, yielding berries with thick, healthy skins.

Winemaking and aging
In the cellar, the approach is precise and minimally interventionist to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The grapes, meticulously sorted by gravity, ferment using indigenous yeasts with rigorous temperature control. For this Château Pontet-Canet 2025, no punch-downs were carried out; the team favored only occasional bleedings, along with highly precise oxygenation and inerting. The aging of this vintage takes place 50% in new barrels, 35% in concrete amphorae, and 15% in one-wine barrels.

Grape varieties
This Château Pontet-Canet 2025 is a blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 1% petit verdot.
