The 2021 Cheval des Andes is seductive and savory on the nose, leading with pure, earth-tinged aromas of pipe tobacco, turned soil, dried herbs and rich yet composed dark fruits. Exotic, dark spice notes and a pleasantly integrated framing of new oak accents appear with further aeration. The palate is deliciously supple and impressively layered, with a harmonious, long and ever-expanding finish that highlights extreme delicacy. The tannins are persistent yet composed, gently yet persistently lengthening the finish and melding nicely with the vibrant acidity underneath—a beautiful combination of savory charm, serious depth and focused intensity. It's a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec and 3% Petite Verdot that spent an average of 12-13 months in 50% barrique, 30% demi-muid and 20% foudre.

Decanter

Since Gerald Gabillet's arrival in Mendoza in 2018, Cheval des Andes wines have gained in elegance and precision. In a great vintage like 2021, the results are spellbinding. Near-equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, with 3% Petit Verdot; the fruit comes from an old vineyard in Las Compuertas and a newer property in the Uco Valley. A fruity, floral wine, with minty hints and a subtle layer of oak that contributes spice and cedar notes. The palate is silky and energetic, with a vibrant freshness and polished, grippy tannins that channel it nicely into the long, perfumed finish.

Light and elegant, the 2021 Cheval des Andes is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot. It achieves a feat that only cool years can provide: smooth texture, agile palate and just the right amount of freshness for a nuanced build. As it breathes, it begins to reveal notes of fresh cherry and plum, with a hint of menthol, maraschino cherries and a touch of pepper. It opens further with aromas of sandalwood and oak that complete the framework. This is a somewhat leaner, more ethereal Cheval than other years, but it has a higher level of precision. It's a wine inspired by Bordeaux, executed in a Bordeaux style, with Mendoza terroir. A wine without edges, it’s a polished red in the early stages of a long, balanced life.

The finest vintage of this wine I've tasted, the 2021 Cheval Des Andes is based on 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, and the balance Petit Verdot. It has a decidedly Bordeaux-like nose of ripe currants, leafy tobacco, cedarwood, and a kiss of flowers, with perfectly integrated background oak. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a layered, seamless mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It has this remarkable sense of purity and class, and while it's incredible today (especially with a decant), I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve gracefully for two decades.

A wonderful Cheval des Andes, luscious, layered, nuanced, a kick of nutmeg spice, blueberry and damson fruits, salted cracker mouthwatering finish, with deftly-handled freshness the signature of a cooler vintage. Gérald Gabillet winemaker, joint venture between Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes. 70% new oak for ageing.

So much intensity, charm and depth in the bouquet of Cheval des Andes, with notes of blackcurrant and pepper complemented by floral nuances, violet, a youthful touch and, above all, plenty of freshness. With good density, the wine is mouthwatering, generous, elegant and powerful. Everything comes together, everything is coherent, with great grace and a clear priority not to overdo it—letting the wine be itself, without the artifices of oak ageing or over-ripeness.

Logo on the cork: A in a circle (Amorim) Deep, intense dark red colour, slightly developed. Very aromatic nose, with ripe fruit. Fresher hints of blackcurrant. Holds up well when the glass is swirled. Delicate on entry, tasty through the mid-palate, the wine gains in flavour as it unfolds. It rises on the finish, long and sappy. Very good and could be mistaken for a Bordeaux. Same score decanted or not. Climatic conditions: 2021 is a cool vintage with fairly high rainfall. Blend: 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 14.1% – pH: 3.8.

The structure and complexity of a great Argentine wine

The property

The adventure of Cheval des Andes began twenty years ago, initiated by Pierre Lurton. It was by combining the know-how of the iconic Château Cheval Blanc led by Pierre Lurton with the terroir of Las Compuertas, located in the Mendoza region, that the idea of creating one of the greatest Argentine wines was born, paying tribute to malbec and the art of Bordeaux blending. Today, Cheval des Andes by Cheval Blanc & Terrazas de Los Andes successfully embodies the ambition of these pioneers who contributed to its birth: to be a grand cru of the Andes with a unique personality.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Cheval des Andes extends over 46 hectares with two complementary terroirs. Located at 1070 meters above sea level, the historic vineyard of Las Compuertas is located on the left bank of the Rio Mendoza. Old malbec vines planted in 1929 bring their richness and complexity, complemented by cabernet sauvignon. To the south, the Altamira vineyard is located at 1150 meters above sea level. In this cooler climate area, 14 hectares of vines are planted with malbec vines dating from 1945. Due to the higher altitude and significant temperature variations between night and day, the grapes have tannins of great finesse with a beautiful freshness and floral notes, thus giving birth to very great Mendoza wines.

Vinification and ageing

Minimal intervention during vinification. The ageing took place 40% in Bordeaux barrels of 225 litres, 30% in 400 litre barrels, and the remaining 30% in 2500 litre vats, half of which were new oak.
