Description
The elegance and aromatic finesse of a Pomerol wine
The estate
Owned by the Bourotte-Audy family, the Clos du Clocher estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau. Like a “marvelous garden” surrounded by low walls, Clos du Clocher represents an essential reference for the great wines of Pomerol, known for its assertive and unique style.
The vineyard
The Clos du Clocher vineyard covers 5.90 hectares of vines aged 33 years on average. Located on the Pomerol plateau, across from the church, the vineyard enjoys an exceptional setting. The Clos du Clocher vines are planted in clay-loam soils resting on blue clay and deep gravel subsoils. Committed to an environmental policy, the vineyard is cultivated with methods of sustainable viticulture.
The vintage
The hot and particularly rainy winter favoured the early budding of the vines. These climatic conditions led to strong mildew pressure in the spring. The early flowering gave hope for a homogeneous harvest. Thanks to sufficient water reserves, the vines did not suffer from the dry summer and the particularly hot days at the beginning of September. Harvested at full maturity, the fruit showed a good acid-sugar balance, and the yields were high.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes were harvested and sorted manually, then transported to the vat room in crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. A gentle, plot-by-plot vinification was carried out in small thermoregulated stainless steel and cement vats, as well as in barrels (full vinification). Manual pump-overs and punch-downs took palce during alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels, as did ageing for 18 months (60% new oak barrels).
The blend
The Clos du Clocher 2020 was made from a blend of Merlot (75%) and Cabernet Franc (25%).
The tasting
The Clos du Clocher 2020 seduces with its expression of the two grape varieties constituting its blend. The intense aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberries) characteristic of Merlot mingle with very soft tannins and an enveloping palate. More discreet, the Cabernet Franc seduces with its spicy aromas as well as its firm and elegant structure.
