An elegant, structured Volnay Premier Cru from an exceptional terroir in Burgundy

The estate
Domaine Comte Armand, also known as Domaine des Epeneaux, was founded in 1828 when Jean-François Armand received Clos des Épeneaux as a dowry upon his marriage. For nearly two centuries, this family estate has remained in the hands of the same family. Today, the estate is run by Vicomte Gabriel Armand, who continues the tradition of excellence established by his ancestors. Winemaking is overseen by Paul Zinetti, who took up his position in 2014. The estate covers nine hectares spread across Pommard, Volnay and Auxey-Duresses. A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, Domaine Comte Armand practices biodynamic farming, demonstrating a deep respect for the environment and for the authentic expression of Burgundy’s terroirs.

The vineyard
The climat Les Fremiets lies on the border with Pommard, on the slopes of Volnay. This prestigious Côte de Beaune appellation is renowned for producing red wines of remarkable elegance. The shallow, stony soils, dominated by Oxfordian limestone, lend the wines a distinctive minerality and characteristic tension. The favorable exposure and altitude allow Pinot Noir to ripen optimally, giving rise to refined, complex wines that express with finesse the typicity of this exceptional terroir.

The vintage
The 2021 vintage was a cool, classic year in Burgundy, marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. A devastating frost episode in spring significantly reduced yields across the region. Despite these challenges, the most meticulous winegrowers succeeded in producing elegant, fine wines, defined by their aromatic purity and freshness. The year’s cool conditions favored the production of wines with bright natural acidity and a delicate aromatic expression.

Winemaking and aging
The winemaking of the Volnay 1er Cru "Les Fremiets" 2021 was carried out by Paul Zinetti in keeping with principles that respect the fruit and the terroir. The grapes were harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified with care to preserve the natural elegance of Pinot Noir. Aging took place in oak barrels with a moderate proportion of new wood, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving the purity of its fruit expression and the finesse of its tannins.
