An Anjou Chenin Blanc Revealing the Full Mineral Character of the Loire’s Schists

The Estate

Established in 2018 by Ivan Massonnat in the heart of the Layon Valley in the Loire, Domaine Belargus cultivates 24 hectares of Chenin Blanc according to biodynamic principles on the emblematic schist terroirs of Savennières and Quarts-de-Chaume. Ivan Massonnat formed this estate by acquiring the Pithon-Paillé properties, part of Laffourcade, and Taillandier. The name evokes a blue butterfly endemic to the region, symbolizing the parcel-based approach inspired by Burgundy’s grands crus that reveals the nuances of each micro-terroir.

The Vineyard

The plots "La Gordone" and "Les Mardereaux" cover 0.79 hectare in the Anjou appellation, planted on north-facing slopes with inclines of 10 to 25°. The silty-clay soil rests on a schist subsoil, giving the wine its distinctive mineral signature. The Chenin Blanc vines, planted between 2010 and 2014, are farmed using biodynamic methods.

The Vintage

An early winter gave way to a spring marked both by its mildness and a frost event impacting the vineyards. A particularly dry summer preceded a favorable late season for the proper ripening of the berries.

Winemaking and Aging

Hand-harvested grapes. Winemaking is carried out with indigenous yeasts to respect the authenticity of the terroir. The wine benefits from 17 months of aging on full lees. A light filtration precedes bottling.

Grape Variety

100% Chenin Blanc.
