Vinum

Of sheer pedigree, immense density, utmost nobility, and stunning aromatic complexity; world-class.

Robert Parker

The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a beautiful white Pessac-Léognan. It offers a very succinct and focused bouquet of dew-speckled Granny Smiths, then flint and wet limestone, certainly a more stony bouquet than overt fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, exquisite balance, the citrus fruit dappled with white pepper and spices, but everything very judicious and nuanced. It offers wonderful persistence in the mouth, basically a class act that comes strongly recommended.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Gorgeous, with lemon chiffon, white peach, yellow plum and yellow apple fruit that has weight and cut, underscored with a long honeysuckle note and a streak of quinine. The finish sports some serious depth; this will be fun to cellar. Best from 2018 through 2026. 1,665 cases made.

Decanter

There are reductive, flinty touches to the nose – it’s still extremely young – with green and red apple notes and some clear slate and wet stone minerality. The palate widens as it opens in the glass, deepening and revealing nectarine and stone fruit flavours. It’s an excellent wine in a year that keeps on delivering right through the palate and hangs on for more.

This is so solid and structured. It’s bigger and better than most 2014s! What a wine. Full body with flavors of stones, dried apples and pears. Goes on for minutes. Yes man!

Bold, full nose with a tropical character to the fruit – this could almost be mistaken for an Australasian style. Juicy, refreshing and full of fruit, but it seems to tail off somewhat on the finish. (RH)

WOW! Now we're talking. This attention-seeking wine grabs you with all its crisp, fresh, polished, yellow citrus, flowers, lime and honeydew melon. The blazing acidity cuts perfectly, leaving a sensation of crushed rocks, lemon peel and grapefruit that couldn’t be any fresher.

René Gabriel

Medium yellow with linden-green nuances, bright. Subtle bouquet, the finest citrus notes, mint and white peach flesh, delicate and multi-layered. On the palate, slender with fine tension, Granny Smith and plenty of aromatics on the finish. Focuses on finesse and a racy character.

Fruity, creamy, fresh bouquet with yellow peach, honeydew melon, and a hint of fine grapefruit. Silky, elegant and fragrant palate with good fruit, a full, finely voluminous structure, powerful, fresh aromatics, and a long, delicate finish with good afterflavors. 18/20 2020 - 2036

Just enough age to really showcase the ability that Chevalier white has to power through the years. Fleshy but precise white peach and green apple fruits. Now that it has a few years in bottle, the quince and white pepper notes are beginning to show themselves, and this is a white wine to make you smile, and to gulp back in way too short a time, with sappy acidity giving persistency, wet stone tension and mouthwatering pleasure. Poised and structured, and very good. Drunk on a boat at sundown, with great friends, a lovely moment of the year.

Bettane+Desseauve

A wonderfully complex nose with citrus, linden, citrus zest, old rose, and great minerality; a broad, powerful palate, highly aromatic with superb freshness. Racy and nervy.

La RVF

All freshness and precision, it shows the long, taut character of Sauvignon from a cool terroir. The length is impeccably shaped around juicy, flavorful fruit with no rough edges. It retains the crystalline, pure style of its birth. It will go far.

Le Figaro Vin

Elegant, balanced, fruity, taut, sapid, lemony finish.

Pale yellow color. Intense, fruity nose, but also reduced. Don’t hesitate to decant it gently. The palate has a silky touch, a melting mid-palate, yet the structure is dynamic. Long, sappy finish, a touch austere, but it’s very good.

Wine Enthusiast

R.V.

This is a structured wine with its tight acidity and concentrated white and citrus fruits. Produced from a small parcel on the Chevalier estate, it is complex with its mineral texture, its touch of pepper and its fine herbal acidity. It is a wine for long-term aging. Drink from 2023.

Description

Fresh and complex, a fine Pessac-Léognan white wine

The producer

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the beautiful Domaine de Chevalier is one of the finest Bordeaux Crus Classés. Like a secret garden, this iconic vineyard located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the south of Bordeaux, is surrounded by a green haven.

The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier watches over a rare vineyard comprising 5 hectares of white vines. A true patchwork of terroirs, the Domaine de Chevalier vineyard is composed of black sand and fine white gravel soil and rests on a perfectly drained clay-gravel subsoil.

The vintage

The mild weather at the beginning of the year, combined with an early spring, favoured the flowering period at the beginning of June. The summer was marked by stormy and humid weather conditions until the end of August, causing a delay in the ripening period. An Indian summer set in from the end of August to the end of October, combining strong sunshine with dry winds ensuring a good concentration, but also cool nights, ideal weather conditions to help reach optimum ripeness and refine the tannins.

The vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo successive selections based on their level of ripeness. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in barrels, as is the 18-month ageing period (1/3 new barrels), followed by regular stirring of the lees.

The blend

The dry white wine by Domaine de Chevalier 2014 comprises a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (75%) and Semillon (25%).

The tasting

Pure and smooth, this fine white wine from Pessac-Léognan offers an appealing freshness, richness and an intense fruity expression. Throughout the tasting experience, citrus aromas are combined with a delicate mouthfeel and a beautiful minerality.
