The Pure, Mineral Expression of a Beaune Premier Cru by Domaine de la Vougeraie

The Estate

Officially founded in 1999, Domaine de la Vougeraie has established itself as an unmissable reference in Burgundy. Still owned by the Boisset family, this family estate oversees a vast vineyard spanning 44 hectares. Recognised as the largest certified organic and biodynamic producer in the Côte d'Or, the estate stands out for its respectful approach to living ecosystems and its constant pursuit of excellence, producing wines that faithfully reflect the purity of their terroirs.

The Vineyard

This wine comes from the largest Climat classified as Premier Cru within the Beaune appellation. Located at an altitude of around 250 metres on an east-facing slope, the plot rests on complex soils, combining silt at the base of the slope with clay-limestone rich in iron oxide higher up. The name of this terroir comes from its gravelly nature, which promotes excellent drainage. Farmed according to biodynamic principles, with horse ploughing and the use of plant-based preparations, the vines benefit from a high planting density to encourage the qualitative expression of the grapes.

The Vintage

After a mild, dry winter, the growing cycle began early at the end of March, before being slowed by cool temperatures in April and May. June, warm and sunny, helped accelerate vine development. Although August initially brought rain and overcast skies, a subtropical heatwave and dry weather set in around the 20th of the month. These ideal conditions at the end of the season encouraged rapid sugar accumulation and perfectly balanced phenolic ripeness ahead of the harvest.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes for this Beaune 1er Cru "Les Grèves" 2023 are hand-harvested and transported by gravity. Vinification includes 61% whole clusters, with the rest destemmed. After a five-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts, for a total maceration period of around twenty days. The wine is then pressed vertically before being barrelled for 16 months' ageing in oak casks, 33% of which are new. Cellar operations strictly follow the lunar calendar.
