Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Solid, with a youthfully tight core of crushed cherry and kirsch, underlined by notes of tar, cedar, tobacco and sanguine minerality. Shows good depth and length in reserve, so cellar to let this fill in and fully stretch out. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2020 through 2030. 5,000 cases made, 300 cases imported.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Intense ruby, purple reflections, broad and bright rim. Fresh orange zest, dark forest berries, fine tobacco nuances, inviting bouquet. Juicy, ripe heart cherries, round tannins, subtle fruitiness on the finish, harmonious, already accessible, good ageing potential.

Description

The richness and power of a great red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The property

With origins dating back to the 14th century, the Domaine des Sénéchaux is recognized as one of the oldest vineyards in Castro Novo, the land of the Pope's wines. A must-see reference among the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate was acquired in 2006 by the Cazes family, also owners of the prestigious Château Lynch-Bages, Grand Cru Classé de Pauillac.

The vineyard

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine comes from plots located on the "plateau" of the appellation, facing south, southwest. 3 different types of soils make up the pedological composition of the area: pebbly clay-limestone soils, deep sandy soils, and molassic sandstone and safre soils. Typical of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the famous quartzite rolled pebbles allow the vines to capture the sun's heat during the day to reflect it at night.

Benefiting from the expertise of Bernard Tranchecoste, the Technical Director in charge of the teams since 1998, the vineyard spread over 24 hectares of vines is maintained with the utmost care with short pruning, ploughing, organic fertilizers and green harvesting.

Vinification and aging

In order to preserve all the typicity of the appellation and to obtain a beautiful roundness of the tannins, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 from Domaine des Sénéchaux is made following precise vinifications with punch-downs, rack and returns and light pump-overs. Then comes the aging period combining different containers: vats, barrels of one and two wines.

Blend

Grenache (64%), syrah (19%), mourvèdre (15%) and vaccarèse-cinsault (2%).
