Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024 from Domaine Lorenzon
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep red hue, adorned with garnet and violet reflections.
Nose
With remarkable intensity, the aromatic bouquet releases scents of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. With aeration, it grows more complex, revealing notes of cocoa, sweet spices and orange zest, along with subtle floral and mineral nuances.
Palate
The palate seduces with its silky texture and beautifully refined tannins. Boasting fine concentration and vibrant acidity, it offers a dense structure that extends into a long, savoury and delicately spiced finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, slow-cooked dishes in sauce, or feathered game such as pigeon or quail. It also complements soft-rind cheeses like Époisses or Langres beautifully.
Serving and Cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, this Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024 should be served at a temperature of 16 to 17°C. While still young, it is recommended to decant it for one to two hours to fully release its aromatic complexity.
The Concentration and Finesse of a Mercurey Premier Cru
The Estate
The Lorenzon family's history in Burgundy dates back to the early 20th century, but it was in 1997 that Domaine Lorenzon entered its modern era when Bruno Lorenzon took over the family estate. Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, in France, this vineyard of around 9 to 11 hectares spans some of the finest slopes of Mercurey and Montagny. The current owner, drawing on his experience as a cooper, applies a demanding philosophy here: organic viticulture, controlled yields and minimal intervention in the cellar, establishing the estate as one of the region's key benchmarks.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from the Clos des Champs Martin, a small plot of around 0.6 hectares nestled within the Mercurey appellation. Facing south and south-west, the vines, over sixty years old, thrive on clay-limestone soils rich in stony debris. The estate practises organic viticulture here, with no herbicides used for the past three decades. Planting density is exceptionally high, reaching up to 14,000 vines per hectare, which encourages strong root competition and natural concentration in the berries.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft this Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024, the grapes are hand-harvested into small crates. Vinification is carried out with a high proportion of whole clusters, generally around 75 to 80%, using indigenous yeasts and without any chaptalisation. Extraction is gentle, with long macerations and very few punch-downs to preserve the finesse of the tannins. The wine is then aged for close to twenty months in oak barrels, of which around 40% are new, all meticulously crafted by the winemaker himself.
