Description

The velvety mouthfeel and structure of a Red wine from Moulin-à-Vent

The estate

Established in 1937 by Marcel Janin with the acquisition of the first parcels on Le Tremblay, Domaine Paul Janin now extends across several prestigious lieux-dits of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in the Beaujolais. Eric Janin, fourth-generation winemaker, currently manages this family estate in Romanèche-Thorins, alongside his daughter Perrine, who is preparing to take over. The domaine stands out for its early environmental commitment, having abandoned herbicides as early as 1995, and for its unique terroir marked by the presence of manganese, which gives its gamay wines a distinctive mineral signature.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from the lieux-dits Les Greneriers, Les Pérelles, Les Brusselions and Les Burdelines, located on the slopes of Romanèche-Thorins in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. The vineyard is planted on very weathered granite soils and ancient alluvial deposits. The vines, mostly less than 40 years old and trained in the traditional low gobelet method, benefit from respectful soil work with three to four plowings per year, without the use of herbicides.

Vinification and aging

Hand-harvested on September 15. The grapes, picked in small crates, were sorted on a sorting table at the domaine, ensuring an optimal selection of berries. The vinification of the Empreinte 2023 took place over 12 to 15 days before pressing, with 70% of the fermentation in whole clusters preserving the freshness and primary aromas of gamay. Eleven months of aging in tanks on fine lees allowed the development of aromatic complexity while retaining the fruity character. Each parcel was vinified and aged separately before blending after tasting, just prior to bottling.

Grape variety

100% gamay noir, the emblematic grape variety of Beaujolais.
