Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Ponsot
Tasting notes
Colour
The glass reveals a beautiful, luminous pale gold colour, streaked with subtle golden and greenish nuances that highlight its youth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves both complex and fragrant. It exudes scents of ripe pear, honey and lime blossom, intertwined with delicate white flower notes. A mineral thread reminiscent of wet stone and flint blends harmoniously with buttery touches and light smoky accents.
Palate
The palate offers a remarkable combination of delicacy, energy and power. Supported by lovely acidic vivacity and a persistent minerality, this generous, full-bodied wine unfolds intense flavours of fruit and earth. The whole retains great freshness and extends into an exceptionally long finish.
Food and wine pairing
This great white wine is sublime with shellfish and fine fish in sauce, such as roast lobster, turbot with mousseline sauce or sole meunière. It also pairs wonderfully with scallops in cream or with black truffles, as well as with refined white meats such as poultry with morels or veal fillet with chanterelles. Foie gras and aged cheeses, such as Comté, Beaufort or mature Cantal, also make excellent tasting companions.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate its aromatic palette, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. With remarkable aging potential, it can be enjoyed until around 2048.
Other characteristics
This vintage has an alcohol content of 14.42%, with a pH of 3.38 and an acidity measured at 3.99 g/l.
The mineral, generous expression of a Burgundy Grand Cru
The estate
Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, Domaine Ponsot is an emblematic figure of Burgundy. Established in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this prestigious family estate has built a solid international reputation thanks to its respect for terroir and natural farming methods. Spanning generations with a pioneering vision, the estate is now led by Rose-Marie Ponsot, who continues the legacy of five generations of winegrowers by carefully tending exceptional plots.
The vineyard
The vines that give rise to Corton-Charlemagne benefit from a natural, respectful viticultural approach that limits human intervention to the strict minimum, favouring healthy biodiversity. Traditionally planted on terraced hillsides, the vines undergo gentle pruning adapted to each variety. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, accompanied by rigorous sorting directly in the vineyard to ensure optimal phenolic ripeness of the berries.
The vintage
The year 2023 began with a particularly dry and warm winter and early spring. In March, welcome rains helped replenish soil moisture, subsequently favouring regular flowering in May. After a few stormy episodes in June, the summer season proved mild. Harvesting took place in September during an unusual heatwave, prompting the teams to pick the grapes exclusively during cool mornings to preserve the fruit's brightness.
Winemaking and aging
The winemaking process begins with whole-bunch pressing. Natural fermentation starts in stainless steel tanks before finishing in barrels. The wine then undergoes 22 months of aging in oak barrels, 30% of which are new, alongside partial malolactic fermentation.
Grape variety
Chardonnay (100%).
