The Elegance of a Burgundy Chardonnay from Domaine Raquillet
The Estate
Located at the heart of Burgundy, Domaine Raquillet is an essential reference in the Côte Chalonnaise. While the family history spans twelve generations, the modern estate was officially established in 1990 when it was taken over by François and Emmanuelle Raquillet. Joined by their daughter Jeanne in 2018, the current owners cultivate fourteen hectares of vines with great precision. Certified High Environmental Value since 2022, this renowned estate stands out for its meticulous reading of the terroirs and its ability to produce wines that combine depth with approachability.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from a single one-hectare plot located in a cool, breezy sector of the Mercurey appellation. Averaging around forty years of age, the vines thrive on soils composed of marl with low limestone content, topped with scree stones on the surface. The vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices, with mechanical soil work. Simple guyot pruning is complemented by rigorous bud thinning and leaf stripping to ensure optimal vine health ahead of an entirely manual harvest.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft this 2024 Mercurey Village "Vieilles Vignes", whole clusters are gently pressed before the must undergoes settling. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place in French oak barrels at controlled temperatures between 18°C and 22°C. The wine is aged for twelve months on fine lees in large vessels, including 20% new 400-litre barrels, to preserve all of its minerality. Racking and light filtration take place before bottling.
