Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for La Part des Anges 2017 from Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils
Tasting
Colour
The colour is deep and almost opaque, with intense purple highlights, characteristic of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape dominated by Mourvèdre.
Nose
The nose reveals notes of ripe dark fruit, blackberry and blackcurrant, enhanced by spicy touches of clove and cinnamon from the ageing, along with hints of roasted plum, coffee beans and spice box, over a subtle pencil-lead background reminiscent of new oak.
Palate
The palate is ample and velvety, supported by firm yet ripe tannins that promise a fine evolution. A delicate acidity balances the richness of the fruit, leading to a long, flavourful finish that is both pure and persistent.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine is ideally paired with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a leg of lamb with herbes de Provence or a cut of beef cooked over a wood fire. It also pairs well with game dishes, such as a wild boar stew or roast venison, as well as with hard, mature cheeses such as an aged Comté or a Beaufort.
Serving and Cellaring
We recommend decanting La Part des Anges 2017 approximately one hour before serving, at a slightly cool temperature of around 15 to 16°C, to fully reveal its aromas. This vintage can be cellared until around 2037.
La Part des Anges 2017, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dominated by Mourvèdre
The Estate
Founded in 1963 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône Valley, Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils carries on a family tradition with Piedmontese roots. Now run by Stéphane Usseglio, who took over the estate in 1999, the domaine cultivates approximately 18 hectares of vines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, complemented by plots in Côtes du Rhône and IGP. Committed to organic and biodynamic farming and certified Demeter and Biodyvin, the domaine showcases a variety of terroirs and old vines, some of which are over a hundred years old.
The Vineyard
The grapes for La Part des Anges come from the terroirs of Mourre de Gaud and Terres Blanches, two renowned lieux-dits of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The vines are planted on soils composed of rolled pebbles and sandy rock, which absorb the heat of the day and release it at night, promoting even ripening of the grapes. Farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles and certified Demeter and Biodyvin, these plots are home to old vines that contribute to the concentration and complexity of the wine.
Vinification and Ageing
The vinification of La Part des Anges 2017 relies on indigenous yeasts, in a traditional approach that respects the terroir. The Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah are then carefully aged in a combination of large foudres and barriques, a precise ageing process that gave this cuvée its evocative name.
Grape Varieties
This blend is built on Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah, the signature of this cuvée within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
