Colour
This red wine from France reveals a deep hue, enhanced by garnet and violet nuances.

Nose
Remarkably pure, the bouquet first reveals subtle woody notes. It then opens onto delicate aromas of kirsch, brambles, violet, dried herbs and green pepper.

Palate
The attack is soft on the palate before giving way to a superb structure in the mid-palate. The whole is generous, carried by exceptionally silky tannins that lend the wine a graceful complexity, without any sense of heaviness. The finish stands out with a particularly long aromatic persistence.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs perfectly with rich, flavourful meats. It will beautifully accompany Bresse poultry served with a gratin dauphinois or a herb-crusted filet mignon. It will also enhance braised or grilled red meats, mushroom-based dishes, as well as matured cheeses.

Service and storage

With great ageing potential, the "La Viaillère" 2022 cuvée will offer an optimal tasting window between 2025 and 2032 or so. The most patient enthusiasts may nonetheless keep it well beyond this period to enjoy its full evolution.

The estate

Founded in 1971 by René Rostaing, Domaine Rostaing is located in Ampuis, at the heart of the northern Rhône Valley. Originally a notary by profession, the founder truly transformed his estate in the early 1990s by inheriting plots from historic figures of the region. Today, the vineyard spans more than twenty hectares. Since 2015, Pierre Rostaing, René's son, has been the current owner and manager. He passionately carries on the family legacy, favouring a classic, terroir-respectful approach to create wines of internationally recognised elegance.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from a historic plot of around half a hectare, ideally located below the prestigious Grandes Places sector in Côte-Rôtie. This steep terroir, dominated by schist soils, is home to century-old vines whose average age reached 90 to 100 years at harvest. The estate favours sustainable viticulture, excluding any herbicides or artificial fertilisers. The harvest is exclusively manual, and yields are deliberately limited to ensure optimal quality and concentration in the berries.

Winemaking and ageing

To craft "La Viaillère" 2022, the bunches undergo partial destemming to add greater structure. Fermentation takes place under temperature control, thanks to the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes. A long maceration gently extracts the compounds from the old vines. The wine is then aged for 18 to 22 months in 600-litre oak demi-muids. The exclusive use of barrels that have held one to four wines ensures delicate micro-oxygenation while preserving the purity of the fruit.
