Domaine Zind-Humbrecht : Riesling "Roche Calcaire" 2022

Brimming with star fruit, bergamot and flint, this is a dangerously fresh and mineral-dry riesling for this warm, dry vintage. Terrific drive right through the bone-dry palate, with slate and Amalfi lemon zest strident on the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Roche Calcaire is harvested across the limestone soils of the estate from vines that do not make it into the single vineyards. In 2022, this was restricted to the marl and limestone soils of the village of Gueberschwihr, around the Goldert Grand Cru, a site that Humbrecht calls “virtually drought-proof.” The nose still flickers with yeasty funk and lovely, flinty reduction, but even this funkiness does not obscure the vibrant lemon and orange peel. The palate is fresh but so buffered, with stunning limestone smoothness wrapping itself around a central vein of bright freshness. This is lip-smacking and approachable. Cuvée coming almost 100% from Gueberschwihr, the birthplace of Olivier Zind Humbrecht’s father. Marl-limestone-sandstone soils. The youngest vine is 40 years old. The bouquet shows ripe, fresh notes, with an evident harmony of citrus and flint. Saline on the attack, the wine offsets the ripe character shown on the nose. It is lively, mouthwatering, sapid and thirst-quenching.

A captivating Riesling with a slight reduction and a whisper of wilderness that adds intrigue without overwhelming the fruit. The wine bursts with vibrant, zesty citrus and green apple, underscored by mineral notes and a lovely purity. There's great energy here, with the acidity providing a sharp, refreshing lift. The finish is long and persistent, echoing with stony, citrus-driven freshness.
