The estate
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal, the E. Guigal House is an unmissable institution of the Rhône Valley, based in Ampuis. Now led by Philippe Guigal, a third-generation oenologist, and his wife Ève, the estate stands out for its worldwide excellence. The domaine has expanded onto prestigious terroirs while preserving a sustainable approach, certified High Environmental Value. The house also owns its own artisanal cooperage, ensuring perfect mastery of its ageing process.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the famous hill of Ermitage, a historic terroir acquired by the family in 2001. Facing due south, this vineyard rests on a complex geological mosaic combining granite, limestone, iron, sand, quartz and clay. The vines are cultivated according to sustainable practices that respect the ecosystem, the estate being certified High Environmental Value level III for its commitment to biodiversity and the preservation of soil life.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by extreme climatic conditions in France, standing out as the hottest and driest vintage since 1950. After an arid winter and spring, strong heatwaves swept through June and July. However, providential rains in mid-August allowed the ripening of the berries to resume. Despite this water stress, the growing cycle resulted in a harvest of great quality, offering wines of beautiful balance with moderate alcohol levels.
Winemaking and ageing
Produced only in years deemed exceptional, the Ermitage "Ex Voto" white 2022 is the subject of meticulous attention. The House crafts its own barrels in an artisanal manner within the Château d'Ampuis. Thus, this wine benefits from an extended ageing exclusively in new oak barrels. This traditional method allows the wine to be refined patiently, revealing all the authenticity of its origins without the influence of the wood becoming dominant.
Grape varieties
Marsanne and Roussanne.
