Jancis Robinson

Rich fruit and signature purity. Fine tannins lurking in the background but overall a satisfying wine. Should open out in bottle. Long. (JR)

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2023 Frédéric Esmonin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful garnet-red hue of medium intensity, reflecting the youthfulness of this French wine.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a pronounced expression of red fruit, enhanced by floral notes reminiscent of violet. Subtle mineral touches, dried herbs and delicate spicy nuances round out this olfactory ensemble.

Palate
Rich and majestic, the palate offers an elegant structure supported by firm yet silky tannins. The balance is remarkable, revealing a beautiful richness that extends into a long, persistent finish, guided by a minerality typical of its terroir.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with feathered game such as duck, served with reduced sauces. It also enhances braised beef with mushrooms, poultry in cream sauce or dishes featuring truffles. A selection of fine charcuterie also makes an excellent choice.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 16°C, taking care to open it thirty to forty-five minutes before tasting. This wine offers great aging potential and can be cellared until around 2038.

The estate

Founded in 1988 with its first commercial bottlings, this family-run estate is located in the heart of Burgundy. Today, Frédéric Esmonin runs the property, supported by his father André in the vineyard and his mother Michele in administration. Spanning approximately 4.5 hectares since its expansion in 2003, the estate stands out for its environmentally respectful approach and constant pursuit of finesse. Although discreet in France, this producer enjoys a strong international reputation, offering wines that authentically express the purity of their terroirs.

The vineyard

The terroir from which this Gevrey-Chambertin originates benefits from a privileged setting. The Premier Cru plot, facing due south and located at altitude, sits on sandy-textured soils resting on a bedrock of clay and limestone. The estate practices sustainable farming, having excluded synthetic herbicides for over fifteen years, and promotes microbial life through winter humus additions and regular ploughing. The harvest is carried out by hand by a loyal and experienced team, ensuring rigorous sorting of the bunches.

The vintage

The year was marked by warm weather conditions, favouring good concentration. After a variable spring, the summer season saw above-average temperatures, accompanied by dry weather in July and August. However, crucial rainfall in June allowed the vines to get through this period without excessive stress, resulting in a balanced harvest with well-preserved acidity.

Winemaking and aging

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes destined for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2023 are fully destemmed. A four to five-day cold maceration precedes fermentation carried out by native yeasts, favouring gentle extraction. The wine is then aged for fourteen to seventeen months in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new wood ranging from 35 to 60%. The wine is bottled without prior fining or filtration.
