The estate

For four generations, Domaine Joseph Drouhin has been a must-know reference among fine Burgundy wines. Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, who was 22 years old at the time, the estate has expanded over the years and has reached its current size of 80 hectares. The vines spread over renowned appellations (Beaune, Bonnes-Mares, Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos Vougeot, Corton-Charlemagne, Grands-Echezeaux, Pouilly-Fuissé, etc.).

Since 1957, this family of precursors has advocated respect for the terroir and the environment both regarding the vineyard management and the production of their fine wines.

The red and white wines of Domaine Joseph Drouhin authentically express the mosaic and richness of the Burgundian terroirs. They are renowned for their elegance, their intense fruity aromas and their gourmet complexity.

The vineyard

This 2020 Joseph Drouhin "Clos des Mouches" is a Beaune 1er cru wine made from grapes grown on a 6.75-hectare plot of land located in the southern part of the appellation.

This terroir, close to Pommard, derives name from the old beehives, known at the time as "mouches à miel". In the 1920s, Maurice Drouhin gradually acquired this vineyard, which compised 41 plots of land divided between 8 owners.

The vines are 39 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soil, with stony soil in the upper part and marl-limestone rock in the heart of the vineyard. These soil types endow the wines with a fine expression.

Planted both with red and white grapes, this plot of land has been farmed organically since 1990 and then biodynamically a few years later, producing some of the estate's most emblematic wines.

Vinification and ageing

Harvested and sorted by hand, the grapes undergo maceration and vinification for a total of 2 to 3 weeks. Only indigenous yeasts are used during fermentation. The extraction process is carried out with great care in order to give the wine its colour, structure, finesse and distinctiveness. The wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels (20% of which are new), dried for more than 3 years to contribute to the finesse of the wines.

The tasting

Colour
A beautiful ruby red colour.

Nose
The intense and fresh nose blends fruity fragrances (red fruits, blackberries, morello cherries, raspberries), smoky aromas and also liquorice. After a few years of ageing, the bouquet gives off more complex notes of pepper, brown tobacco, humus and oak.

Palate
A bold and precise attack is followed by a firm and dense mouthfeel. Fresh in its youth, the palate reveals a round, well-balanced and silky texture over the years.
