Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Santenay Village 2022 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour of this red wine from France reveals a deep ruby hue, both bright and vibrant, enhanced with subtle violet reflections reminiscent of black cherry.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a beautiful intensity of wild fruits such as blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant and cranberry. With aeration, delicate floral notes of peony and violet emerge, supported by a subtle spicy touch.

Palate
Full-bodied and generous, the palate offers a perfect balance between richness and freshness. The structure rests on silky, high-quality tannins, revealing on the mid-palate delicious notes of pomegranate and grenadine syrup, before stretching into a long, complex finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with roast veal, duck with green peppercorns, coq au vin or feathered game. It also elegantly accompanies fish dishes such as trout with almonds, as well as soft cheeses such as Morbier, Pont-l'Évêque or Chaource.

Service and Storage

To fully enjoy the Santenay Village 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of around 16°C. This wine offers immediate pleasure but will continue to evolve favourably, and can be enjoyed until around 2032.

Other Characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 13.5%.

The Authentic Expression of a Wine from the Santenay Appellation by Maison Joseph Drouhin

The Estate

Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin in the heart of Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure in Burgundy. Now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as chairman of the executive committee, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of around 100 hectares stretching from Chablis to the Mâconnais. A pioneer at heart, the estate stands out for its early commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture as far back as the late 1980s. The family philosophy is founded on a constant pursuit of elegance and absolute respect for the expression of each terroir.

The Vineyard

Located at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, the Santenay appellation benefits from a slightly warmer microclimate, balanced by the altitude and exposure of the plots. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils and rich marls that give the wine its mineral complexity. To craft this cuvée, the estate rigorously selects the best grapes and musts from partner winegrowers who share the same commitment to quality and the same farming practices.

The Vintage

The year 2022 stood out for its highly favourable weather conditions, following a complex previous year. The growing cycle progressed rapidly, with an early and even flowering completed by mid-June. The summer period offered ideal conditions, combining warmth conducive to phenolic ripening and sugar accumulation with sufficient rainfall to avoid any water stress for the vines.

Winemaking and Aging

The Santenay Village 2022 is crafted with a minimal-intervention approach. After complete destemming, fermentation is triggered by indigenous yeasts. Maceration takes place in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by traditional punching down and pumping over. Following vertical pressing, the wine is transferred into French oak barrels, of which 10 to 25% is new oak, previously seasoned for three years. Aging lasts between 12 and 16 months.
