James Suckling

This is an extremely polished and refined young wine with gorgeous blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, dark-chocolate and bark character. It’s full-bodied with ever so fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fantastic second wine of Domaine de Chevalier. Try after 2026.

Antonio Galloni

The 2018 L'Esprit de Chevalier is a gorgeous second wine from Domaine de Chevalier. Soft, pliant and so expressive, the 2018 is simply impeccable. The purity of the flavors is striking. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried herbs add striking perfume to a core of supple red berry fruit. In a word: fabulous.

Smoky dark red berries with cigar box, herbs, forest leaf and currants create an impressive perfume. On the palate, the wine is soft, silky, polished, refined and leaves you with a juicy mouthful of fruit, dark cocoa, herbs and espresso beans. This is perfect for near-term drinking while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop.

André Kunz

Floral, silky, fresh, sweet bouquet; red berries, Himbeer-Tiki, mint, fresh herbs. Fine-boned, medium-bodied palate with sweet fruit, finely sandy tannins, a well-bourgeois structure, delicate aromatics, and a fresh finish. Can still improve. 16/20 drink - 2030

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for L’Esprit de Chevalier Rouge 2018

Tasting

Color
Superb red color, black in the center.

Nose
Very expressive, the aromatic bouquet unfolds a palette of black fruits with scents of blueberry, blackcurrant, blackberry, and cherry. Beautiful spicy and peppery notes then appear before giving way to mineral notes with graphite pencil mine scents.

Palate
On the palate, the mouth offers a delicious and fleshy substance, revealing an elegant structure with very fine tannins. The exquisite sensation of creaminess is balanced by a great freshness of the fruit and a remarkable tension that persists long in the finish. A very great red wine from Pessac-Léognan that will be fully appreciated in its youth.

The property

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the magnificent Domaine de Chevalier is at the top of the greatest Classified Growths of Bordeaux. The estate is located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, which is situated in a green setting south of Bordeaux. L’Esprit de Chevalier is the second wine of the estate.

The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a rare 67-hectare vineyard, resting on a gravelly terroir with clay-gravel subsoils. Since 1986, the young vines have been destined to ripen the berries that participate in the blend of the estate's second wine, L’Esprit de Chevalier.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%).
