Description
A Balanced Second Wine from Haut-Médoc with great aromatic finesse
The property
Located in the heart of the Médoc, Château Chasse-Spleen was founded in 1720. Its name “Chasse-Spleen,” acquired in 1863, is inspired by Anglo-Saxon culture and Baudelaire. The estate has been managed since 2000 by Céline Villars. The Chateau Chasse-Spleen vineyard covers 90 hectares. L'Héritage de Chasse-Spleen is the estate's Second Wine.
The vineyard
Located within the Haut-Médoc appellation, the 20 hectares of vines dedicated to the production of this L'Héritage de Chasse-Spleen 2020 are planted on sandy-gravelly soils upon clay-limestone subsoils. The vines are 5 to 35 years old.
The vintage
The months of January and February were marked by abnormally warm weather. While very good weather conditions continued through the month of March (with plenty of sun and high temperatures), from mid-April until mid-June, heavy rains slowed the development of the vines and reinforced mildew pressure. The beautiful summer sunshine was accompanied by very hot temperatures. The freshness of the soil ruled out the possibility of water stress. The harvest took place under a gray sky with low rainfall.
The vinification and ageing
Rigorously selected, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement vats. The wine is then aged in oak (including 5% new oak barrels).
The blend
The L'Héritage de Chasse Spleen 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), complemented by Merlot (40%) and Petit Verdot (10%).
The tasting
Colour
Clear and bright, the wine is an intense burgundy red colour.
Nose
The bouquet combines aromas of redcurrant and pepper with oaky touches of vanilla.
Palate
Balanced and with a frank attack, the palate seduces with its fine tannins, volume and intense aromas of cherry.
