Description
A full and aromatic Second Wine of Saint-Julien
The estate
Château Lagrange is one of the iconic references in the Saint-Julien appellation. The property boasts ancient origins dating back to Gallo-Roman times, when the estate housed the "Villa Rustica". It was back then that the Order of the Templars first began producing wine at the property. Château Lagrange experienced a real golden age in the 18th century and earned the title of 3rd Classified Growth in the Official Classification of 1855. It was in 1983 that Château Lagrange was acquired by the Japanese group Suntory and its president Keizo Saji. Following a major renovation and investment project carried out by the dynamic new team, Château Lagrange has become one of the top producers of the Médoc region. Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the Second Wine of Château Lagrange.
The vineyard
Château Lagrange's exceptional vineyard extends over a single-block 118-hectare vineyard in the Saint-Julien appellation. The vineyard enjoys a superb location on two gravelly hills. The vines are 45 years old on average and are planted in silica-gravelly soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. The vineyard enjoys a temperate climate with an oceanic influence.
The estate’s Second Wine, Les Fiefs de Lagrange is a Saint-Julien wine made from vines that are 30 years old on average.
The vintage
The year 2021 is marked by relatively low rainfall and a nice persistent coolness during the vegetative cycle. The very mild conditions from the beginning of October are ideal for refining the ripeness levels. With its freshness, aromatic structure and balance, this vintage is reminiscent of those produced in the 2000s.
Vinification and ageing
Manual harvesting followed by a first sorting by hand and a second using optical sensors and cameras. Selection by parcel and intra-parcel. 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for 103 plots of vines. The thermoregulated vinification is accompanied by moderate daily pump-overs, releases or punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation by co-inoculation. Aged for 13 months in barrels (20% new).
The blend
Merlot (52%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (40%)
Petit Verdot (8%).
