Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018 by Louis Jadot

Tasting

Appearance
Bright and clear, the robe reveals a hue ranging from deep ruby to garnet, adorned with subtle violet reflections in its youth.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich and complex. It opens on intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as black cherry, raspberry and blackberry, enhanced by floral notes of peony and violet. Aeration reveals delicate spicy touches, a discreet oaky character evoking vanilla and toasted bread, along with nuances of undergrowth and fine leather.

Palate
The attack is straightforward and fleshy, offering a dense texture yet without any heaviness. The palate is sustained by firm, finely grained tannins, perfectly balanced by a lovely acidity that brings freshness. The finish is long and lingering, marked by a return of the fruity and spicy notes.

Food and wine pairings

This red wine pairs wonderfully with traditional gastronomy, such as beef bourguignon, roasted red meats, duck confit or poultry in sauce. It also goes very well with Mediterranean-inspired dishes such as tagine with prunes, mushroom risottos, as well as washed-rind Burgundian cheeses or pressed cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018 at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. Endowed with a beautiful structure, this wine can be enjoyed now but has cellaring potential that will allow it to evolve favourably until around 2030.

The elegance and complexity of a Premier Cru de Beaune

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, the Louis Jadot House is a true institution located in the heart of the Beaune appellation. This iconic estate of the Burgundy region stands out for its historical expertise. Historically linked to the Gagey family, who are deeply involved in the creation of the wines, the property is now chaired by Thomas Seiter. With a vast vineyard extending over the finest terroirs, the estate is distinguished by its ability to combine tradition, environmental respect and international influence. The house produces wines faithful to their climats, renowned for their great consistency.

The vineyard

This red wine from Beaune comes from the famous Premier Cru climat "Les Grèves", located in the eponymous village. The vines flourish on the steep slopes of the Mont Batois hillside, thus benefiting from excellent exposure and optimal natural drainage. The terroir is characterised by light, friable and sandy soils, scattered with gravel. The house favours viticulture that respects the environment, limiting chemical inputs, mechanically working the soils and promoting biodiversity to let the terroir fully express itself.

The vintage

The year 2018 was marked by overall warm and dry weather conditions. This sun-drenched climate made it possible to reach high levels of ripeness. Thanks to rigorous work in the vineyards, particularly through the management of foliage and yields, the harvested grapes retained a lovely balance, avoiding any heaviness while offering fine concentration.

Winemaking and ageing

To craft this Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018, the grapes are harvested by hand in small crates to preserve the berries. After careful sorting and destemming, vinification begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation in vats with regular punching down and pumping over. Ageing then takes place for around 15 months in oak barrels, one third of which are new, sourced exclusively from the house's own cooperage. The wine is finally fined and filtered before bottling.
