The estate

Established in Tain-L'Hermitage since 1808, the Maison M. Chapoutier embodies the elite of the finest names among Rhône Valley wines today.

Over the years, winemaker and wine merchant, Michel Chapoutier has succeeded in elevating this family business to the top. Maison Chapoutier’s wines are recognised well beyond the borders by the finest connoisseurs for their refinement and their great quality. A man of many talents, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by the American critic, Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken over this iconic house, which has over 350 hectares of vineyards in the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern parts of the Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

M.Chapoutier's 2017 Croix de Bois stems from a terroir that is composed of typical Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils, comprising rolled quartzite pebbles and red sandy clay.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted before undergoing vinification in open concrete vats. Total destemming. Fermentation for 10 days before maceration for 3 weeks. Exclusive use of free-run wine. Aged in vats for 14 to 16 months.

The blend

M.Chapoutier's 2017 Croix de Bois is a 100% Grenache.

The tasting


The colour is an intense red.


The nose gives off black fruit and blackberry jam fragrances.


This wine seduces the palate with its roundness, its smooth feel and its fine and warm tannins.


This fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine can be kept in the cellar until 2067-2092 in order to express all its elegance and finesse.

Another 100% Grenache CdP, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois hints at garrigue on the nose, then eases into a dense, compact ball of dark fruit. Concentrated and tannic, this looks as if it will need five years or more to slowly unfurl its dense layers of dark berries, black olives, licorice and tea.
