Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This is packed with dark currant, fig and blackberry paste flavors, carried by a sleek, racy structure that is nicely embedded from start to finish. Light red tea, dried anise and warm earth accents peek in throughout. Ends with a long, well-buried mineral note. Best from 2023 through 2038. 48 cases imported.

Decanter

This is silky with real tannic finesse and, while it doesn't have the intensity of some vintages, it has beautiful balance and purity with sweet plum, violets, and blueberry. It’s not as long as some but still displays that Bessards straightness of character. Will drink soon.

Jancis Robinson

Richard Hemming MW

100% Syrah. Aged for 20 months in oak (30% new). Cask sample. Raspberry and blackberry, lots of tarry, elemental flavours on the palate. Very savoury, very dark, and with a very dense structure that gives the palate a firmly furry finish. The classic muscle-flexing style of Hermitage! (RH)

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Saturated ruby color. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and incense, with cured tobacco and potpourri notes in the background. Shows impressive depth as well as vivacity in its lush blueberry, cherry-vanilla, mocha and fruitcake flavors, which display outstanding definition and back-end lift. Tightens up through the back half and finishes on a youthfully tannic note, with reverberating spice and floral notes and strong persistence. Made from de-stemmed fruit and aged in 20% new oak barrels.

La RVF

The fruit shows slight compote notes and the nose opens with clear ripeness: black olives, spices, and some touches of aromatic oak. The palate is full and fleshy. Overall, it’s concentrated and a bit warm, lacking length, and does not have the finesse of the Hermitage.

Description

The complexity and aromatic richness of a great red wine from Ermitage signed M. Chapoutier

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Pavillon 2018 from M. Chapoutier is an Ermitage wine made from a plot of about 4 hectares that owes its uniqueness to its atypical geology consisting of a thin layer of sediments resting on a granitic subsoil. The grapes produced from this vineyard of old vines, averaging 65 years old, are recognized for their high quality.

Vinification and aging

Ensuring a low yield, these old vines are harvested manually, at the limit of overripeness. 100% destemming then vinification in concrete vats accompanied by one to two punch-downs per day to ensure optimal extraction. Maceration of 4 to 5 weeks.

Made exclusively from a free-run wine, this plot cuvée benefits from an aging of 18 to 20 months in oak barrels (including on average 30% new barrels). The clarification is natural.
