Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The 2004 Cote Rotie La Mordoree is dark ruby/purple in 2004 with notes of cassis, melted licorice, incense, and pepper. The wine has good power, concentration, although not the intensity of the great vintages, but this is a strong effort for 2004. Importer: Terlato Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-8900

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Racy and pure, with a nice solid beam of red currant and plum fruit layered with grilled herb, red licorice and mineral notes. Tight and hard on the finish now, this should flesh out nicely with some cellaring. Best from 2008 through 2016. 340 cases made, 80 cases imported.

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Dark red. Powerful, ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas deepened by strong mineral and smoked meat tones. A rich, almost brooding style, resembling a wine from Hermitage, with chewy texture and deep, liqueur-like red and dark fruit flavors. Finishes ripe and very long, with powerful tannins.

Wine Enthusiast

J.C.

Made from 70–80-year-old estate-grown vines, this boasts a tremendously complex and seductive bouquet of smoke, violets, raspberries and blackberries. In the mouth, it's a bit less exciting although still very good; it's juicy and fresh, with some firm tannins that are accentuated by crisp acidity. Give it a few years, then drink up before 2015.

Description

The balance and elegance of a Côte-Rôtie wine

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 ratings awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Mordorée 2004 from M. Chapoutier is a Côte-Rôtie wine made from old Syrah vines. Located on the edge of the Côte blonde, this plot is planted on soils composed of chloritic and ferruginous mica schists. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

Vinification and aging

Harvested at full maturity, the grapes undergo total destemming. Vinification in concrete tanks, accompanied by daily pump-overs to promote optimal extraction of color and tannins. Exclusive use of free-run juice. The aging lasts 14 to 18 months and is carried out in 225-liter barrels.
