Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Cherry, raspberry and pomegranate flavors are the hallmarks of this rich, juicy Barbaresco. Earth, mineral and underbrush notes add detail as this builds to a long crescendo. Shows fine harmony, with a mouthwatering finish. Seems more open than its peers from 2021. Best from 2028 through 2045. 400 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Enticing minerality here that makes you think the fruity, savory oranges and plums grow up through the stone cracks. Expressive and ethereal at first, then the thud of fine, chalky tannins give it power and definition. Broad, long and elegant. Drink from 2025.

Barbaresco. Lustrous mid ruby. Deep cherry and raspberry fruit with a touch of richness. Much more compact and closed on the palate, suggesting this needs more time. Lots of fresh acidity and finely ground tannins. Still a little embryonic. (WS)

Chiarlo's 2021 Barbaresco Asili is rich and enveloping in feel. In other words, classic Asili. Macerated red cherry, spice, leather, tobacco, orange peel, incense, spice and mocha build nicely, framed by a kiss of French oak that is a signature here. This fleshy, inviting Barbaresco will drink well right out of the gate.

A rich red color, the 2021 Barbaresco Asili is lifted with mint aromas of medicinal herbs, dried cherries, anise, and spices. Medium-bodied, it has balanced intensity on the palate, with angular structure and good ripeness throughout. As it opens, it becomes more rosy and floral, and it’s zesty with notes of blood orange, saline, and dusty earth, as well as a lovely mineral texture through its rather long finish. I like this one more than I initially thought. Drink it over the next 10 years.

The nose reveals an abundance of sweet spice, intertwined with the essence of cherries macerating in a bowl, all uplifted by floral notes. On the palate, fine tannins provide a rounded texture, highlighting mixed berry and plum flavors dusted with spices from the cabinet. The finish is a perfect landing, Chiarlo is making it look easy. Characteristics and tasting advice for Michele Chiarlo's Asili 2021

The palate, of beautiful complexity, seduces with the softness of its tannins and remarkable persistence.

A great wine from Piedmont, both refined, expressive and of beautiful aromatic richness

The property

The fame of the eponymous estate Michele Chiarlo has been written since 1956, when this oenologist decided to create his own estate and produce great wines from Piedmont. His ambition? To enhance the terroirs and grape varieties of Piedmont and reveal their own personality through a constant quest for excellence and tailor-made winemaking. Located in the village of Calamandrana, within the Barolo appellation, the Michele Chiarlo estate produces wines recognized for their inimitable style, harmoniously combining aromatic complexity with supple and silky tannins.

The vineyard

The Michele Chiarlo estate watches over a mosaic of vineyards spread over 110 hectares, constituting a real treasure of the Langhe, in the north of Italy.

The wine

Produced since 1996, the Barbaresco Asili from Michele Chiarlo is made from a vineyard of about 1 hectare, facing southwest. Averaging 30 years old, the vines are planted on soils composed of limestone marls with a low presence of clay. Poor in organic matter, this terroir is rich in magnesium and calcium.

Vinification and aging

The manually harvested grapes undergo vinification in 55hl oak vats with cork wetting. Following malolactic fermentation, this wine benefits from a minimum of 2 years of aging, including 18 months in medium-sized barrels, as well as additional bottle aging before its marketing.
