Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Redoma Branco "Reserva" 2024 by Niepoort
Tasting
Colour
The wine reveals a beautiful golden hue with greenish reflections.
Nose
The bouquet opens with delicate notes of white flowers and fresh herbs, evolving towards subtle hints of citrus and lemon. It also showcases a beautiful aromatic complexity marked by aromas of orchard fruits, hazelnut, flint and light vanilla nuances.
Palate
With a medium to full body, the palate offers a creamy texture at its core while retaining a lively and incisive character. It unfolds persistent flavours of green fruits and stone fruits, accompanied by notes of hazelnut and savoury touches. The whole is enhanced by a pronounced minerality, typical of its terroir, bringing a saline sensation reminiscent of sea water on the finish.
Food and wine pairings
This great white wine pairs wonderfully with white meats, roasted or creamed poultry, as well as pork-based dishes such as alentejana. It also perfectly complements seafood: oysters, raw shellfish, lobster with lemon butter, smoked fish or even rich fish stews and seafood cataplanas.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the complexity of this wine, it is advisable to decant it about thirty minutes before serving. The optimal tasting temperature is between 10 and 13 °C, in order to preserve its freshness while revealing its aromatic palette.
The mineral and elegant expression of a great white wine from the Douro by Niepoort
The estate
Founded in 1842, the Niepoort House is a historic figure of Portuguese winemaking. Initially renowned for its Port wines, this family brand has reinvented itself under the leadership of its current owner, Dirk van der Niepoort, representing the fifth generation. Based in Vila Nova de Gaia with vineyards rooted in the Douro region (and more broadly the Duriense geographical area), the estate stands out today for its low-intervention approach and sustainable viticulture. It excels in the production of internationally renowned table wines that faithfully reflect the authenticity of their terroirs.
The vineyard
The grapes come from old vines, aged between 30 and 80 years, located on the right bank of the Douro river. Planted at altitude, between 400 and 600 metres, this terroir is characterised by mica schist soils and harsh climatic conditions, with significant thermal amplitudes between day and night. These elements foster a beautiful aromatic concentration while preserving the natural acidity of the berries. The vineyard work is part of a sustainable approach, with manual harvesting followed by rigorous sorting directly on the plot.
Vinification and ageing
The process begins with gentle pressing followed by a 24-hour settling without skin maceration. Fermentation starts spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels of 228 and 500 litres. Ageing continues in these same vessels for nine months, on fine lees and without bâtonnage, with partial malolactic fermentation. This exceptional cuvée is the result of a meticulous selection, carried out blind each year, barrel by barrel.
Grape varieties
This Duriense wine is made from a blend of indigenous white grape varieties including Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio.
