The elegance and complexity of a great sweet wine from Tokaj

The estate

Founded in 1993 by the Álvarez family, owners of the renowned Spanish estate Vega Sicilia, Oremus is a major player in the revival of Tokaj wines in Hungary. The estate draws on an exceptional historical heritage, combining underground cellars dating back to the Middle Ages with modern facilities. Now led by Róbert Kindl, who succeeded the iconic András Bacsó in 2021, the estate pursues excellence through a philosophy that blends respect for tradition with technical innovation, in order to produce wines of worldwide renown.

The vineyard

Located at the heart of the Tokaji appellation, in the village of Tolcsva, the vineyard spans around a hundred hectares classified as Premier Cru under the historic 1803 classification. The vines thrive on stony clay and loess soils, resting on a subsoil of volcanic tuff. The cool climate, combined with morning mists generated by the Bodrog River and sunny afternoons, favors the development of noble rot. The estate favors sustainable practices, incorporating organic and biodynamic principles, as well as horse plowing on certain plots.

The vintage

The year 2019 began with a cold January, followed by a mild and very dry end of winter. Spring saw mild temperatures at first before turning considerably cooler. After a scorching June and a cool, rainy July, harvest began early in September. October offered ideal climatic conditions, with cool nights, warm and windy days, and high humidity, allowing for optimal development of botrytis.

Winemaking and aging

The making of the Tokaji Aszú "5 Puttonyos" 2019 requires extreme patience and precision. The botrytized berries are carefully harvested in successive passes, then macerated for about two days in a base wine or fermenting must. After gentle pressing, the wine ferments in Hungarian oak barrels for nearly two months. Aging then continues for a minimum of two to three years in traditional oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its full complexity.

Grape variety

Furmint is the emblematic grape variety of this wine, providing structure and acidity.
