Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

The full-bodied 2019 Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre delivers attractive notes of mixed plums and crushed stone. Not overly rich or concentrated, it looks to be an early-maturing Cornas, with silky tannins framing a lingering finish.

Plenty of cracked-pepper and dark-berry aromas with some dried flowers as well. Then fresh flowers and dried citrus. Full and flavorful with a beautiful center palate of blackberries and cloves. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold.

Josh Raynolds

Opaque violet color. Displays potent, mineral-accented dark berry preserve and incense aromas that are complemented by floral, olive and musky spice nuances. Chewy, densely packed and focused on the palate, offering intense blackberry, blueberry, candied violet and smoky bacon flavors that become livelier with air. Finishes on lingering mineral and floral notes, with solid thrust, youthfully gripping tannins and excellent persistence.

The 2019 Cornas Domaine De Saint Pierre is pretty and finesse-oriented, with plenty of ripe blackberry and ripe cherry fruit as well as spice and peppery herbs. It’s medium-bodied, has supple tannins and good balance, but is not particularly long or rich.

Description

The aromatic expression of a Cornas wine signed Jaboulet-Aîné

The property

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné is an iconic name of the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley. It was founded in 1834 in Tain L'Hermitage. The renowned oenologist and winemaker Caroline Frey runs this illustrious house, owned by the Frey family since 2006. The Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné looks after 125 hectares of vineyards, spread over exceptional appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu or Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

The vineyard

A benchmark among Cornas wines, Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's 2019 Domaine de Saint-Pierre comes from a steep, south-facing terroir of 3.9 hectares that protects the vineyard from cold winds. Located on the top of the hillside, the vines aged from 10 to 60 years are planted in a natural amphitheatre on a granitic mother rock with a subsoil of limestone and silty deposits. The Domaine de Saint-Pierre has been owned by the Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné since 1996.

The vintage

The dry winter did not make up for the water stress recorded since 2018. The milder conditions from February onwards favoured an early bud break, but this progress was slowed down by the drop in temperatures at the end of March - beginning of April. Flowering started around June 7th and took place in very good conditions. The hail storm of June 15th slowed down the development of the vines. The summer conditions were scorching. The rigourous work of the estate's team throughout this vintage allowed us to harvest healthy grapes of great quality.

Vinification and maturation

Harvested by hand, the grapes are sorted by plot. Vatting time of about 4 weeks with soft extractions. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new.

The blend

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's 2019 Domaine de Saint-Pierre is a 100% syrah.

Guard

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's 2019 Domaine de Saint-Pierre can wait in the cellar until 2039 to express its full aromatic range.
