The Finesse and Structure of a Pomerol Wine

The Estate

First appearing in the archives in 1837, Pétrus has risen to the very top of the hierarchy of Bordeaux wines, in France. Located on the right bank, this estate spans a vineyard of 11.5 hectares. Historically driven by the vision of Edmonde Loubat and later by the Moueix family, the estate is now owned by Jean-François Moueix. Under the technical direction of Olivier Berrouet, the estate continues a philosophy centered on the natural expression of the terroir, further cementing its status as a benchmark in winemaking around the world.

The Vineyard

Rising to an altitude of 40 meters, the vineyard occupies the highest point of the Pomerol plateau. It rests on a unique geological terroir, made up exclusively of blue smectite clay on the surface and iron-rich subsoil (crasse de fer) beneath. Divided into twelve plots, the vines, averaging 40 years of age, benefit from sustainable farming practices, with no chemical fertilizers and regular plowing. The harvest is meticulously carried out by hand, berry by berry, to ensure optimal quality.

The Vintage

The year was marked by particularly demanding weather conditions. After a decent start to the season, the growing cycle faced a difficult flowering period and strong mildew pressure. Unpredictable weather conditions continued through the harvest period, requiring constant vigilance and great flexibility to pick healthy grapes, resulting in particularly low yields.

Winemaking and Aging

After complete destemming, the berries are gently crushed. Fermentation of Pétrus 2024 takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in the same vessels. Extraction is carried out through daily pumping-over. To preserve the brightness of the fruit, a reductive aging process, slightly shorter than usual, was favored. The wine then ages in French oak barrels, half of which are new and the other half have previously held one or two wines.
