Decanter

Nicely fragrant, very Cabernet in the aromatics, dried herbs, mint and blackcurrants. Floral, red and blue fruits, crunchy. Smooth and so succulent, cool and so sleek with a lovely soft juiciness on the mid palate. The end is taut and focused but this keeps a stylish profile, lean but with enough fruit and texture to be filling. Very sophisticated, serious and structured. Definite charm here. Very easy to drink with salty wet stones on the finish. Not demonstrative, a little severe, but classy too and still with power—it’s just funnelled. Liquorice, cola, wet stones, crushed graphite. 15% press. 50% production. Concentrated. 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is the highest proportion for Reserve ever. Ageing 50% new oak. pH 3.7.

Black cherries, chocolate, flowers, and a cigar box create the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh, silky, and fruity, with elegance and charm. In contention for the best second wine of the vintage, it blends 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. 12.7% ABV. pH 3.7. The harvest took place from September 23 ending October 9. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 Pts

The Cabernet Sauvignon’s freshness is immediately evident, with nuances that already ready the palate to welcome a host of flavours. Inviting notes of raspberry, mint and blueberry set against a backdrop of fresh oak. On the palate, the aromatic promises deliver in a juicy, immediately appealing style. The wine has good density, with muscle and still a bit of flesh. It may not be the most concentrated Réserve I’ve known, but it is probably the most thirst-quenching! Still, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the wine is at the beginning of its ageing. One to follow as it evolves. The finish is gently saline, subtly austere and persistent. A mouth-watering wine with depth and a clear sense of purpose, focused on quality—because that is exactly why it exists. Not by default, but by conviction and ability.

Unusually austere on the opening for this highly consistent wine, but things build slowly but surely, expanding through the mid-palate to show chalk, crayon, cassis and cocoa bean, grilled herbs. 48% of overall production in the Pichon Comtesse Reserve, 3.7 pH. IPT 65, 50% new oak for ageing, 15% press wine.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Recommendations of the Pichon Comtesse Réserve 2024

Tasting

Nose
The bouquet opens with a delicate floral expression of fresh rose and peony, evolving towards notes of redcurrant and citron, enriched by powdery and spicy nuances of sandalwood.

Palate
The attack reveals a round, savory texture marked by delicate vanilla notes from the oak. The palate is airy and mineral, unfolding a remarkable complexity with fruity aromas of red cherry, spicy and peppery touches, as well as a floral dimension. The sapid and precise finish extends thanks to a fine and elegant tannic structure.

A second wine from Pauillac with complex aromas and a refined structure

The estate

Created in 1850 following the division of the Pichon-Longueville estate, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande thrives on the Pauillac terroir. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru in 1855, it is now owned by the Rouzaud family, proprietors of the Louis Roederer Champagne House. The estate’s uniqueness stems from its remarkable feminine heritage, embodied by figures such as Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, and May-Eliane de Lencquesaing. Its château, inspired by Bordeaux’s Hôtel de Lalande, and its refined style reflect this historic feminine imprint unique to the Médoc.

The vineyard

The vineyard covers 114 hectares, of which 92 hectares are in production, planted on the characteristic gravel soils of Pauillac over clay-sandy subsoils. The vines average 28 years of age. The estate is committed to an environmental approach with 85% of the vineyard in organic conversion and the application of biodynamic preparations.

The vintage

The year 2024 was marked by record rainfall during winter and spring, accompanied by cool temperatures that slowed the vegetative cycle. Flowering took place from early June to véraison in mid-August, a period marked by coulure and millerandage phenomena as well as unprecedented downy mildew pressure. Fortunately, ripening occurred under dry, sunny conditions from mid-July to the end of August, allowing the harvest to take place from September 23 to October 8 under favorable conditions.

Winemaking and aging

Parcel-based vinification in truncated cone tanks fed by gravity. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrels, 50% of which are new oak with medium toast. The wines benefit from traditional racking by sillage and egg white fining according to ancestral methods.

Blend

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc.
