Jancis Robinson

Julia Harding MW

Test-tube-sized sample. A blend of very old tawnies to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Each of the 1,945 [1945] bottles is individually numbered and ‘presented in a bespoke luxury case, designed to reflect the grandeur and historical significance of this edition’, according to the press release. Lightish amber brown. Intense and glorious aroma of polished wood and sweet/savoury dried fruits, especially fig, and walnuts. I couldn’t find better words to summarise the flavours than Taylor's themselves have used: ‘rum and raisin’. There’s a dark caramel flavour but the sweetness tastes moderate thanks to the complexity of the wood-aged flavours. Fabulous power, depth and freshness, the flavours last forever. Glorious and a fitting tribute to the end of the war. Stunning and unspittable. (JH)

Characteristics and Tasting Recommendations for Taylor's Victory Port 80 Year Old Tawny

Tasting

Appearance
Mahogany hue fading to a golden copper at the edges.

Nose
Complex bouquet revealing aromas of rum and raisins, molasses, caramel, coffee beans, golden sultanas, sweet cigar leaf and hazelnut notes. The fine wood adds remarkable elegance to the whole.

Palate
Smooth, velvety texture unveiling flavors of nutmeg, gingerbread, anise, quince, black pepper, fig pudding and candied apricot. The balance between sweetness and lively acidity is perfect, offering an immensely long finish with complex layers.

Pairings and Tasting Occasions

It pairs perfectly with fig, almond and caramel desserts, as well as with crème brûlée and wild strawberries. It can also be enjoyed on its own, accompanied by nuts or dried fruits. An Exceptional 80-Year-Old Porto Imbued with Elegance and Freshness

Taylor's, Historic Douro Port House

Founded in 1692, Taylor's is a family-owned Portuguese Port house established in the Duriense region. Owned by the Taylor Fladgate family since its inception, it holds several Grade A vineyards in the Douro. Run by the founders' descendants, Taylor's stands out for its Portos aged in artisanal oak casks in its historic Oporto cellars. The house particularly excels in very old Tawnies, offering exceptional blends from its own vineyards, cementing its reputation as the ultimate benchmark in the world of prestigious Portos.
