The 2021 Syrah has contained ripeness and 14.5% alcohol, lower than in previous vintages. It's varietal with Mediterranean touches, aromas of licorice, ripe Morello cherries and wild berries and with a spicy twist. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins, balance and clout. 10,370 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022 after it spent one year in new and second-use barriques.

A structured and elegant Spanish red wine from the Montes de Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha

The estate

Founded in the late 1990s by entrepreneur Alfonso Cortina, the Vallegarcía estate now spans 31 hectares in the Montes de Toledo. A founding member of Grandes Pagos de Castilla, the estate obtained the prestigious Vino de Pago DOP classification in June 2019. Located near the Cabañeros National Park, Vallegarcía has established itself as a benchmark for quality viticulture in Castilla-La Mancha thanks to its commitment to excellence and its internationally renowned consultants, including the Boissenot family from Bordeaux.

The vineyard

The Syrah vines cover 7 hectares within the estate. Planted in 1999, they benefit from a due south exposure at 850 meters above sea level. The acidic, nutrient-poor raña soils, formed from the breakdown of ancient rocks, give the wine its distinctive minerality. This demanding terroir, combined with the continental climate of the Montes de Toledo, allows for optimal grape ripening. This wine is classified as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla.

Vinification and aging

This Syrah 2021 underwent cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation and maceration then took place over around three weeks with regular pump-overs. The wine was then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, allowing for a harmonious integration of tannins and the development of its aromatic complexity.
