The excellence of Chardonnay in Burgundy by the house of Verget
The estate
Founded in 1990 by the Belgian couple Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen, the négociant house Verget is located in Sologny, at the heart of Burgundy. Driven by the conviction that great wines are born from the finest grapes, the estate challenges traditional hierarchies by showcasing the terroirs of the Mâconnais. Today, Jean-Marie Guffens remains the owner and figurehead of the estate, while having entrusted technical direction to winemaker Julien Desplans. Together, they uphold a demanding philosophy centred on rigorous selection, establishing Verget among the region's benchmark producers.
The vineyard
Located within the Mâcon-Charnay-lès-Mâcon appellation, the Clos Saint-Pierre plot thrives on south-facing slopes of the Mont du Mâconnais. The vines benefit from ideal sunshine exposure and sink their roots into shallow soils composed of clay with a high proportion of limestone. This geological configuration limits vegetative vigour and promotes optimal berry concentration, forging the mineral identity so characteristic of this terroir.
The vintage
The year 2024 offered particularly favourable weather conditions in this area. The south-southwest exposure and the nature of the soils allowed the grapes to reach optimal phenolic and sugar ripeness, ensuring a harvest of great richness.
Winemaking and aging
The making of the Mâcon-Charnay "Clos Saint-Pierre" 2024 begins with a meticulous sorting of the bunches, followed by very gentle manual pneumatic pressing to extract only the free-run juice. This is then transferred directly by gravity into horizontal stainless steel tanks to avoid any oxidation. Fermentation starts naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for around six months on fine lees in these same horizontal tanks, with only occasional stirring, thereby enhancing textural complexity without compromising the purity of the fruit.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
