The elegance of a great Chardonnay from Puligny-Montrachet by Vincent Girardin
The estate
The family's winemaking history began in 1980, but the true négociant house Vincent Girardin was founded in 1992 in the heart of Burgundy, in Meursault. Today, this prestigious brand belongs to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois. Under the technical direction of Éric Germain, the estate cultivates a vineyard of approximately 100 hectares, of which 18 hectares are owned outright. Renowned for its exacting standards, the House stands out for its environmentally respectful practices and its perfect mastery of the great terroirs of the Côte de Beaune.
The vineyard
The grapes that give rise to this cuvée come from the Les Champs Gains climat, located at the very top of the slope, at the southernmost edge of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, thrive on a shallow, stony terroir composed of a soil rich in clay and limestone. Benefiting from a fine south-east exposure, the vineyard is trained using the Guyot pruning method. Rigorous canopy management is carried out throughout the season, including disbudding, trellising and hedging.
Winemaking and aging
The making of this Puligny-Montrachet 2024 begins with a manual harvest accompanied by meticulous sorting directly on the vine. The berries undergo gentle crushing before pneumatic pressing, followed by light settling of the juice. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations start naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts and bacteria, within French oak barrels of 228 litres (including 15% new wood). The wine is then aged on its fine lees for 15 months, with no bâtonnage. About one month before bottling, the different barrels are blended in vat. Finally, light fining and filtration precede bottling.
