Description
A rich and refined Chilean red wine
The estate
Originating from Catalonia, the Viu Manent family settled in Chile and created a wine trading company in 1935, under the name of Miguel Viu-García and his two sons Agustín and Miguel. Miguel Viu Manent purchased the San Carlos de Cunaco estate in 1966, situated in the Colchagua Valley, marking the start of a new chapter in the family's history. The completion of major restructuring work on the estate enabled the Viu Manent family to produce fine Chilean wines year after year. Bursting with flavour, refined and aromatic, the wines from the Viu Manent estate enhance the richness of the Central Valley's exceptional terroirs in over 30 countries.
The vineyard
Viu Manent watches over a 325-hectare terroir spread over 3 vineyards.
The wine
Viu Manent's VIU 1 2017 is the sixteenth edition of this wine, made from a rigorous selection of grapes from the 4th block of the San Carlos vineyard. This century-old vineyard is located near Cunaco in the Colchagua Valley. This terroir is unique due to its sandy-clay alluvial soil, whose excellent drainage throughout the vegetative cycle leads to the production of a very high quality wine.
The vintage
Although the winter presented a seasonal climate, the exceptionally mild temperatures during spring favoured an even budburst, that occurred 2 weeks ahead of schedule. This mildness, which continued throughout the summer, ensured the optimal flowering, fruit set and colouring of the grapes. The harvest starts 2 to 3 weeks earlier than average. The grapes are small and concentrated, reducing yields by 10 to 15%.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are sorted on the vine and upon arrival at the estate, in order to keep only the best quality grapes. Destemming precedes a third sorting. Pre-fermentation maceration for 7 days at 10ºC (50ºF). Alcoholic fermentation, using selected yeasts, in small stainless steel tanks, followed by 4 short pump-overs to optimise a gentle extraction. A post-fermentation maceration precedes racking into oak barrels and oak tuns for natural malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 18 months in tuns (56%), clay amphorae (13%) and then in French oak barrels for 18 months. Bottled without filtration to preserve the concentration and character of the wine.
The blend
This VIU 1 2017 by Viu Manent is a blend of Malbec (93%) and Petit Verdot (7%).
