Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Reserva 2022 from Bodega Marqués de Murrieta
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with garnet highlights, accentuated by tears that trickle slowly down the sides of the glass.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is both intense and complex. It releases generous aromas of ripe red and black fruit such as cherry, raspberry, blackberry and plum. This fruity core is enhanced by notes of liquorice and subtle hints of chocolate liqueur, along with nuances of cedar, dried flowers, eucalyptus and black pepper.
Palate
The attack is warm and smooth, opening onto a fleshy, round and perfectly balanced body. Firm yet silky tannins lend the palate an elegant structure. Lively acidity brings freshness and vibrancy, leading to a long, persistent finish with delicate echoes of stewed fruit, balsamic and mineral notes.
Food and wine pairing
This cuvée pairs beautifully with flavourful red meats, as well as with a wide variety of fish dishes.
Serving and cellaring
To fully enjoy this Reserva 2022, serve it at 16–18°C after decanting it for thirty to sixty minutes. With excellent ageing potential, it can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2038.
The elegance of a wine from Bodega Marqués de Murrieta in Rioja
The estate
Founded in 1852, Bodega Marqués de Murrieta is a historic and pioneering name in La Rioja. This exceptional estate is centred around a vast, single 300-hectare vineyard. Today, it is passionately run by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family, led by Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga. By combining deep respect for tradition with ongoing technical modernisation, the estate crafts wines with long ageing potential, renowned worldwide for their classicism and great precision.
The vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the Finca Ygay vineyard, located in the Rioja Alta sub-region. The vines thrive at altitudes ranging from 320 to 485 metres, on terroirs made up mainly of clay-limestone soils. This topographical diversity allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while preserving their natural freshness.
The vintage
2022 was marked by a hotter and drier climate than usual, punctuated by two summer heatwaves. These weather conditions accelerated the vine's growth cycle, resulting in rapid ripening of the grapes. To preserve the balance of the fruit, the harvest was carried out by hand and began early, running from 7 to 23 September.
Winemaking and ageing
After careful destemming, the different varieties that make up this Reserva 2022 are fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasts eight to ten days, with regular pumping over and punching down to gently extract aromas and polyphenols. The wine is then slowly pressed in vertical presses. Finally, it undergoes lengthy ageing for 25 months in 225-litre American oak barrels, followed by a year of rest in bottle before release.
