Description
A structured and aromatic Piedmont red wine
The estate
Borgogno is a reference point for Italian wines and one of the oldest producers in La Langa and Piedmont. Founded in 1761, the Borgogno estate has been developing internationally since the 1920s, driven by Cesare Borgogno. The Farinetti family acquired the estate in 2008. Andrea Farinetti has been at the head of the estate since 2010.
The vineyard
Borgogno's vineyard, which is sustainably managed without the use of chemical inputs, stretches across 30.8 hectares of vines planted on clay-limestone marl soil, which contributes to the unique signature of the wines of this Piedmontese estate.
The wine
Fossati 2017 is a Barolo wine that stems from a vineyard placed on soils formed of sandy earth atop a major layer of blue marl, silt and clay.
The vintage
2017 was a hot and dry vintage. A mild winter was followed by a rainy and warm spring, which led to early vine development. At the end of April, a sudden drop in temperatures led to frosts which, thanks to the altitude, did not impact the estate’s vineyards. In May, the climatic situation stabilised with favourable conditions that put no pressure on the health of the vineyard. The summer was very hot and dry but, fortunately, at the end of August, the return of rain balanced the water reserves in the soils for the delicate phase of grape ripening. As the harvest approached, the large temperature variations between day and night were ideal for preserving the aromatic freshness of the grapes.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes were de-stemmed and pressed before spontaneous fermentation in concrete vats over about 18 days. Malolactic fermentation took place during a 28-day maceration with an immersed cap. The wine was aged for 3 years in large Slavonian oak barrels, with additional maturation in concrete tanks before bottling.
