Robert Parker

Anthony Mueller

The 2020 Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir, a select offering only made in exceptional vintages, originates from the top 10% of the Galpin Peak barrels, typically involving only six to 12 barrels. This edition consists of just six barrels, emphasising its exclusivity. The medium- to full-bodied wine features an oaky essence that rounds out the profile alongside hints of greenness. It retains a soft texture from the oak while showcasing a persistent greenness that drives the finish, reflecting a nuanced balance between wood influence and varietal character.

Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

Shows concentrated notes of wild cherry, raspberry and star anise as well as a touch of fragrant eucalyptus. This brings forward enticing and expressive flavours, yet they’re tightly meshed to fine-grained tannins and a streak of smoke- and iron-laced minerality. Lightly mouth-watering throughout, this is a finely detailed and graceful version. Drink now through 2030. 152 cases made, 15 cases imported.

James Suckling

A perfumed nose of strawberries, porcini, bark, moss and rose petals. Full-bodied with fine, silky tannins. So much to unpack here. An array of red and black berries wash over the palate, with driving acidity and complex, savoury undertones. Mushroom, bark, moss and oolong. Layered and dynamic. Stays on the palate for minutes. Tense now, so give it a bit more time. Already a stunner. 1,824 bottles made. Sustainable. Best after 2024.

Description

An aromatic and delicate South African red wine

The estate

Bouchard Finlayson has become an essential reference among fine South African wines. The famous Burgundy estate, Bouchard et Fils, partnered with the oenologist Peter Finlayson. Both working towards a common goal, the knowledgeable partners produce fine wines that express the nuances of the great South African terroirs.

Situated on the edge of the ocean in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, also called Paradise on Earth, the estate reigns over 25 hectares of vines that rest on clay slopes. This terroir and the climatic conditions are conducive to the two flagship grape varieties of Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Unanimously recognised for the quality of its wines, the Bouchard Finlayson estate perfectly blends the identity of South Africa's terroirs with Burgundian know-how.

The vineyard

Made only in exceptional years, this Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir by Bouchard Finlayson is a Western Cape wine made from the oldest vines on the estate, which are 22 years old on average.

The vintage

The year 2019 was marked by particularly mild weather conditions during the fruit set. Unstable weather conditions at the beginning of the year precedes optimal weather conditions as the harvest drew closer.

Vinification and ageing

Produced in limited quantities, this emblematic wine is aged in 6 oak barrels, 4 of which are new.

The blend

Pinot Noir (100%).
