Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru du Château Blanc offers up aromas of pear, white flowers and peaches, framed by a deft touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, it's lively and textural, with good underlying acidity. This is a charming, expressive introduction to the vintage, appellation and maison.

A fresh, clean white, offering apple, lemon and floral notes. Light-bodied and harmonious, ending with baking spice accents. Drink now through 2026. 1,000 cases imported.

Decanter

Also exclusively produced at Bouchard since 1907, the white is a blend of four parcels, each vinified separately before blending. Just under 10ha, limestone, clay and marl soils, 9-10 months in wood (up to 15% new) with 3-4 months in stainless steel before bottling. Quite closed on the nose, hints of linden blossom. Citrus acidity and zest on the palate, a mineral note on the finish. Supple oak, ripe and concentrated. Relatively early-drinking.

Neal Martin

The 2019 Beaune Blanc du Château 1er Cru offers candied orange peel, vanilla pod and light almond scents on the nose, a slight improvement compared to its showing from barrel. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a slightly waxy texture, bitter lemon, orange pith and peach skin, leading to a cohesive finish. After a stuttering start, this has found its groove. Tasted at the Bouchard Père tasting in London.

The property

It was in Beaune, in 1731, that the House of Bouchard Père & Fils was founded. Accumulating almost three centuries of history, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. At the head of an exceptional estate in Côte d'Or, the 9th generation of the family still perpetuates this unique know-how in the art of making great Burgundy wines today.

Patience has built up over the years, the vineyard of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now extends over 130 hectares of vines. Bringing together prestigious appellations with exceptional parcels, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique viticultural heritage in Burgundy.

The vineyard

Exclusive to the estate, the "du Château" cuvée has been produced every year since 1907. This wine comes from 5 parcels selected for their complementary qualities: Aigrots, Sizies, Sur les Grèves, Teurons and Tuvilains. Covering an area of 9.92 hectares, the vineyard rests on soils composed, depending on the parcels, of clay, limestone and marl.

Vinification and ageing

Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo rigorous sorting before vinification. Before being blended, the grapes from each climate are vinified separately, in order to preserve the typicity of the different terroirs. The pressing is carried out in two stages, with first an evacuation of the first juices then a cyclic pressing of 2 hours according to the vintage. Ageing for 9 to 10 months in French oak barrels (up to 15% new barrels depending on the vintage) then 3 to 4 months in stainless steel tanks in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.
