Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for the 2019 Barbaresco Currà Riserva by Bruno Rocca
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep garnet red hue, enhanced by elegant ruby highlights.
Nose
Intense and remarkably complex, the nose opens with aromas of fresh red fruit, notably cherry and raspberry. Floral notes of dried rose and violet mingle harmoniously with hints of spice and licorice. A mineral, saline dimension—signature of the Currà terroir—adds further depth to this refined bouquet.
Palate
The palate reveals a structure that is both powerful and elegant. Tight, silky tannins express themselves with finesse, while a lovely freshness carries through the tasting. The finish stands out for its exceptional length, unveiling persistent balsamic and mineral notes.
Food and wine pairings
This 2019 Barbaresco Currà Riserva pairs beautifully with feathered game and grilled red meats. It also elevates dishes featuring Alba white truffle, as well as aged cheeses such as Castelmagno.
Serving and cellaring
This 2019 Barbaresco Currà Riserva offers remarkable aging potential, capable of evolving favorably for 15 to 20 years, or even longer. Decanting for one hour before serving will allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatic complexity. Ideally serve between 16 and 18°C.
An exceptional Barbaresco Riserva from a prestigious Italian cru
The estate
Founded in 1978 by Bruno Rocca, the family estate spans 15 hectares in the heart of Piedmont, within the prestigious Barbaresco appellation. Now run by Francesco and Luisa Rocca alongside their father, the estate continues a documented family presence dating back to 1834. The jewel of the property remains the Rabajà cru acquired in 1958, complemented by the Currà, Marcorino and San Cristoforo parcels. Bruno Rocca stands out for its organic viticulture, the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts and gravity-flow winemaking that favors elegance. This minimalist approach places the estate among the four pioneering producers who established Barbaresco’s modern reputation.
The vineyard
The Currà cru is located in the commune of Neive, within the Barbaresco appellation. The vines, around 50 to 60 years old, thrive on soils composed of calcareous marls and sand, also known as tuff. This distinctive geological composition gives the wine its hallmark elegance and remarkable minerality. The parcels’ south-west exposure promotes optimal ripening of Nebbiolo grapes.
The vintage
The year 2019 proved exceptional in Piedmont. The vintage is characterized by a remarkable classic balance, fine natural acidity and perfectly ripe tannins. These ideal conditions made it possible to produce wines with great aging potential, precisely expressing the typicity of their terroir of origin.
Vinification and aging
The harvest is carried out by hand with rigorous grape sorting. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by an extended maceration of 20 to 25 days to ensure optimal extraction. The 2019 Barbaresco Currà Riserva then benefits from a long aging period, typically 24 to 36 months in French oak barrels, followed by further bottle aging before release, in accordance with the requirements of the Riserva classification.
