Description

The refinement and complexity of a Chianti Classico wine

The estate

Nestled at an altitude of 500 metres, the Castello di Ama estate boasts a rich heritage, as the small village of "Ama" was already known more than five centuries ago for its agricultural activities and its production of Tuscan wines.

The Castello di Ama estate tends to a vineyard of almost 80 hectares, including the illustrious terroirs of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, Casuccia and Montebuoni, located in the historic production area of Chianti and handed down from generation to generation.

The vineyard

Produced since 1985, Vigneto La Casuccia Gran Selezione by Castello di Ama is a Chianti Classico wine made from a vineyard of 12.58 hectares. Spread over 9 parcels, this exceptional terroir is located at an altitude of between 470 and 495 metres above sea level, on clay-limestone soils.

The vintage

Cool and marked by significant temperature variations between day and night, the beginning of 2019 preceded a relatively mild month of February. Wet and cool conditions in early spring led to run-off, which impacted yields. A hot and dry summer favoured an optimal ripening of the grapes until the harvest, which took place from September 5th to October 10th.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification by plot using indigenous yeasts, in thermo-controlled steel vats, accompanied by manual pumping over. Total vatting time for 25 to 27 days depending on the grape variety. After the first racking, the wine is placed in barrels for malolactic fermentation. Blending is carried out at the end of the malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in fine grain oak barrels (40% new and 60% one-year-old) for approximately 14 months.

The blend

Sangiovese (80%)

Merlot (20%).
