Located in the heart of Tuscany, Il Borro extends across the rolling region of Valdarno, near San Giustino Valdarno. This sublime estate harmoniously integrates a restored medieval village and vineyards between Arezzo and Florence.
A Centuries-Old History
The site of Il Borro possesses a rich history dating back to antiquity. Initially a Roman fortress, it was the theatre of conflicts between Arezzo and Florence in the Middle Ages. After belonging to several dynasties, Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired Il Borro in 1993. He then undertook a complete restoration of the medieval village and the property, whilst modernising viticulture with profound respect for the terroir.
Today, Salvatore Ferragamo continues his father Ferruccio's work by enhancing the estate's wines. The wines of Il Borro, created in a constant quest for excellence and environmental respect, enjoy international recognition for their exceptional quality.
A Precious and Carefully Preserved Terroir
Location and Exposure
Nestled in the Valdarno, in the heart of unspoilt hills, the estate benefits from varied exposure, thus optimising the planting of each grape variety.
Geology and Climate
The vines rest on diversified soils, a mixture of silt, clay and pebbles, carefully chosen by the Ferragamo family for their suitability to the diversity of grape varieties. Typically Tuscan, the climate offers hot summers, moderate winters and a thermal amplitude favourable to slow and complete ripening of the grapes.
Cultural Practices
Since 2015, the Italian vineyard has been entirely managed using organic agriculture, following biodynamic principles. The estate is fully committed to sustainability by encouraging biodiversity and favouring agroforestry with ecological practices, whilst integrating renewable energies and rainwater harvesting.
Vinification and Maturation
Harvesting is carried out manually and the modern winery is designed to accommodate long maturation periods, often in French oak barrels.
The Style of the Wines: Between Power and Elegance
The red wines of Il Borro embody a Tuscan identity enriched by international grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah, which confer structure, subtlety and complexity. Their style emphasises density on the palate and aromatic elegance, whilst preserving the freshness and minerality characteristic of the Valdarno. The harmoniously integrated barrel ageing enhances finesse whilst preserving the expression of the fruit.
Il Borro, the Estate's Flagship
The Il Borro estate presents an emblematic cuvée that perfectly captures the elegance and complexity of Tuscan wines. This harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is distinguished by its intense ruby colour and expressive bouquet, revealing aromas of ripe red fruits and liquorice, enhanced by spicy nuances. On the palate, Il Borro offers a rich and silky experience, with balanced tannins and a long, persistent finish. This wine combines power and refinement, thanks to ageing of 18 to 24 months in oak barrels, depending on the cuvée.
Pian di Nova, Between Subtlety and Generosity
Pian di Nova, meanwhile, is a more accessible wine, composed of Syrah and Sangiovese. It is characterised by a ruby colour and floral and spicy aromas, mainly contributed by the Syrah, with nuances of red fruits. On the palate, it is supple, elegant and generous, with marked freshness. This wine is aged for approximately 12 months in barrels.
Polissena Sangiovese, the Mineral Freshness
Polissena is a 100% Sangiovese from vineyards situated at approximately 350 metres altitude on schistous soils that offer excellent drainage. It presents itself with a deep ruby colour and reveals on the nose aromas of red fruits, flowers and sweet spices. On the palate, it is distinguished by beautiful acidity, refined and harmonious tannins, as well as great mineral persistence.
