Decanter

Intense and full of character on the nose. Excellent energy here—the fruit is bright and upfront, though it gets a little overwhelmed by the supple tannins that arrive almost straight away. You can feel the liquorice and dark chocolate edges to the black fruit, which give the overall frame texture and depth, and it has freshness throughout. It just needs time to soften.

This has a perfumed, pretty nose of dried violets, cloves, blackberries, chocolate cherries and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied with firm, fine and powdery tannins. Mouth-coating and expansive, with sweet spice to close. Drink after 2024.

Floral, earthy, smoky, and racy, the wine exudes class and charm with its layers of medium-bodied, soft, fresh, pure, silky, vibrant, mineral-driven red berries. Vibrant and refined, with length and complexity, this is so good now and it is only going to get better with age. This is a clear contender for the best vintage of Grand Mayne ever produced! Drink from 2024–2042.

The 2019 Château Grand Mayne showed brilliantly. Very much in the more elegant, classic style of the vintage, it's medium to full-bodied and straight and focused on the palate, yet brings plenty of mid-palate depth as well as ripe, polished tannins. Black cherries, new leather, dried herbs, and Asian spice notes all define the bouquet, and this is going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 14.3% ABV, 45 hl/ha. Ruby red with a lightening rim. Delicate perfume of wild strawberries and red currants, followed by lingonberry juice and roasted raspberry seeds. On the juicy palate with a velvety texture and elegant body, ripe extract sweetness and supporting tension. In the focused finish, the delicacy shows all its class and ends with red cherries and dried coriander. Bordeaux buyers seeking finesse should absolutely buy this. Chapeau, Jean-Antoine Nony!

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Grand Mayne rolls out of the glass with expressive scents of blackberry pie, juicy plums, and sassafras, followed by wafts of baking spices and violets. The medium to full-bodied palate is firm and chewy, with plenty of black fruit preserves and spicy layers, finishing long.

Le Figaro Vin

A warm, dashing aroma with notes of sandalwood and dried fruits. On the palate, cigar box and precious wood notes, quite heady, bring a lovely spiced character and a texture that tingles and warms.

Such finesse and depth in the bouquet of Grand Mayne. It manages to combine intensity and finesse, revealing notes of wild berries and spices. This wine stands out for its finesse and balance, notably for its ability to bridge liveliness and sapidity. Juicy, persistent finish. A fine achievement.

Beautiful very dark color. Highly aromatic nose, fruity, with a touch of vanilla. Soft on the attack, supple mid-palate, the wine develops with a lovely texture and a finish of black fruits, with well-wrapped tannins. Good length.

Description

A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru by Château Grand Mayne

The estate
The Château Grand Mayne is a true ship amidst a sea of vines in the heart of Saint-Émilion. Erected in the 15th century, it did not take on its viticultural role until the 17th century with the Laveau family, who brought the vineyard and estate to its peak in the 18th century. In 1934, the Nony family took over the wine estate and undertook major renovation works. Today, the Nony family, still at the helm of Château Grand Mayne, maintains this member of Bordeaux's wine elite.

The vineyard
Planted on a clay-limestone hillside and at the foot of a clay slope, this vineyard of Saint-Émilion covers 17 hectares, 14.5 of which are in production.

Winemaking and aging
Harvest from 23 September to 9 October. Winemaking in wooden vats and temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aging in barrels for 18 months. 60% new barrels, 40% one-wine barrels.

Blend
This Château Grand Mayne 2019 is a blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%).
