Description
A superb Pauillac from a great 2017 vintage
Although a year with challenges, the Chateau Haut-Batailley 2017 is a superb vintage for 2017.
A top ranked estate of the Official Classification of 1855, Chateau Haut-Batailley is one of the emblems of the famous Pauillac appellation in the Bordeaux region. The estate has always produced one of the best wines in the Medoc, which consistently show high quality.
Climate difficulties marked the 2017 vintage. The vineyard of Chateau Haut-Batailley was put to the test with water stress and heat due to the late spring temperatures that lasted until the beginning of summer. However, the estate escaped the disastrous frost at the end of April. The thermal amplitude at the end of August made it possible for the berries to reach optimal phenolic ripeness. Loaded with anthocyanins, the berries had favourable skin pigmentation. The harvest began early on September 14 with the Merlot and then it moved on to the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cabernet Sauvignon (66%) dominates the blend with a compliment of Merlot (34%), and the 2017 vintage shows great promise for Chateau Haut-Batailley. The wine is a beautifully brilliant colour with garnet reflections. The fruit is pure and intense with lovely toasty notes along with hints of forest floor. On the palate, there is a seductive expressiveness that reveals a superb texture. The supple mouthfeel with its delicate tannins leaves a harmonious sensation that extends to the finish. Everything about this Pauillac is grand from its superb drinkability even in its brightful youth to its long ageing potential.
