Description
The finesse and smoothness of a Pauillac wine
The estate
Château Haut-Batailley, Fifth Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Official Classification, is a benchmark in the Pauillac appellation. Its name is derived from the word "bataille" (battle), in memory of the fighting that is said to have taken place on the estate at the end of the Hundred Years' War in the 15th century.
Since 2017, Château Haut-Batailley has been run by the Cazes family, who are continuing the work begun by the Borie family in 1930 while carrying forward the style and quality of this key Médoc cru on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.
The vineyard
The Château Haut-Batailley terroir stretches across some forty hectares to the south of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Julien. Improving biodiversity is one of the major challenges facing the Cazes family, and is reflected in the planting of agro-forestry. In 2022, 910 trees and shrubs of 14 different varieties were planted in the heart of the vineyard.
The vintage
2022 is a year marked by major weather differences between a very cold winter and a hot, sunny, dry summer, which has an impact on grape size.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes were harvested by hand, then sorted in the vineyard, then on the table. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (65% new).
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (70%)
Merlot (30%).
