Description
Tasting Characteristics and Recommendations for Château Léoville Barton 2015
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine reveals a dark, deep colour, adorned with intense garnet-purple hues.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich and complex. It expresses seductive notes of well-ripened black and red fruits, such as blackcurrant, plum and redcurrant, harmoniously blended with touches of cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate and delicate hints of violet.
Palate
Full-bodied and vibrant, the palate offers a tannic structure that is both powerful and remarkably refined. The balance is exceptional, carried by lovely freshness and a velvety texture, extending into a long, mineral finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a rack of lamb with herbs or a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms. It will also enhance game dishes such as roasted pigeon or venison, as well as aged hard cheeses like mature Comté or extra-mature Mimolette.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this 2015 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, taking care to decant it one to two hours before tasting. Built to age, this great wine can be kept in the cellar and enjoyed until around 2042.
The Richness and Balance of a Great Saint-Julien Terroir in Bordeaux
The Estate
The winemaking history of Château Léoville Barton truly began with its founding in 1826, when Hugh Barton acquired vines at the heart of the Médoc. Today, this prestigious Second Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux is run by Lilian Barton Sartorius, representing the ninth generation, alongside her children. The estate spans 51 hectares and is dedicated to preserving a strong family identity along with a deeply classic style. This hallmark guarantees structured, elegant wines that remain true to the appellation's reputation for excellence.
The Vineyard
Located within the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, the terroir covers 51 hectares under production. The vines, with an average age of 38 years, are planted at a high density of 9,100 vines per hectare on superb gravel rises resting on a clay subsoil. This exceptional natural drainage is complemented by environmentally responsible practices, with the estate holding High Environmental Value certification.
The Vintage
The year 2015 benefited from an ideal growing cycle, marked by a warm, dry summer that favoured excellent berry ripening. Cooler nights later in the season helped preserve a lovely balance. Hand-harvesting took place from 19 to 22 September for the Merlot, followed by 28 September to 5 October for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemaking and Ageing
After careful optical sorting, the berries are transferred into temperature-controlled wooden vats by gravity. Fermentation lasts a little over a week, followed by maceration of around three weeks. The wine is then aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. It is traditionally fined with egg white before bottling.
Grape Varieties
This wine is made from a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot.
